Job Summary

The ASL Educational Interpreter provides language access and instruction for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and staff, ensuring effective communication and equitable participation in educational settings. This role includes interpreting between ASL and English, and supporting language development consistent with best practices in Deaf education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide high-quality ASL interpretationto students and, when applicable, staff to develop receptive and expressive language skills.

Interpret communication in a variety of settings (classrooms, meetings, school events) between English and ASL with accuracy and professionalism.

Assist in planning and facilitating ASL-related events such as family experiences or staff professional development.

Collaborate with general and special education teachers, support staff, and families to support student learning and communication access.

Maintain records of interpreting assignments, student progress, and instructional outcomes.

Use educational and assistive technology tools to enhance communication and learning.

Uphold confidentiality, professional ethics, and district policies in all work.

Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance ASL/Deaf education skills.

Qualifications

Required:

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).

Ability to interpret effectively between ASL and English in both educational and informal school contexts.

Preferred:

Certification as a Deaf Interpreter (CDI)or Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA)

Experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students in educational settings.

Skills & Competencies

Evaluation

Performance will be assessed in accordance with district evaluation policies, including instructional effectiveness, interpreting accuracy, collaboration, and professional responsibilities.
