TITLE: Guidance Counselor, Grades K-4

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Maine Certification as a guidance counselor, K-8.

2. Minimum of two years of successful teaching experiences within the K-8 grades.

3. Evidence of the interpersonal skills needed to relate effectively to students, staff, and parents in both individual and group settings.

JOB GOAL: The counselor works as an integral part of the educational team, to encourage, maintain, and promote successful performances in the academic, personal and interpersonal domains through direct and indirect services to students, parents, and school staff.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Implement and participate in the evaluation of the Wells-Ogunquit C.S.D. Guidance Plan for grades K-4.

2. Provide an orientation program which will inform students, faculty, and parents of the counselor’s name, daily location, services offered, and conditions related to counseling communication.

3. Meet with students for self-referrals and referrals from teachers, parents, and others.

4. Conduct a minimum of one workshop, in-service program, or faculty meeting per year dealing with information and/or specific techniques related to working more effectively with students and/or their parents.

5. Provides an updated Local Referral Agency Information sheet to include telephone numbers, individuals’ names when appropriate, and specific services offered, as needed or requested for students, parents and others.

6. Consult with parents, school staff and other professionals regarding students.

7. Meet with new faculty members prior to the opening of school or as soon as possible to acquaint them with the guidance counselor and the services and programs provided.

8. Assume responsibility for policies related to student records and promote a school policy on records to conform to state and federal regulations.

9. Interpret students’ records, including testing, to school professionals and parents in a manner which promotes the students’ best interests.

10. Promote guidance and counseling through available media.

11. Participate on a regular basis in a process of self-education to enhance and improve professional skills.

12. Prepare a proposed budget for implementation of a planned guidance and counseling program for the ensuing year.

13. Complete records assigned by the School Committee, Superintendent of Schools, and Principal.

14. Perform tasks which may be assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.

15. Plan, organize and deliver the comprehensive school counseling program.

16. Implement the guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions for all students.

17. Implement the individual planning component by guiding individuals and groups of students and their parents through the development of educational and career plans.

18. Implement the responsive services component through the effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation and referral skills.

19. Implement the systems support component through effective guidance program management and support for other educational programs.

20. Discuss the counseling department management system and the program action plans with Principal.

21. Possesses knowledge of how to use data as a guide to program direction and emphasis.

22. Monitor the students on a regular basis as they progress in school.

23. Implement the master calendar/time component to have an efficiently run program.

24. Develop a results evaluation for the program.

25. Conduct a yearly program audit.

26. Establish and convene a school advisory council for the comprehensive school guidance and counseling program.

27. Serve as student advocate, leader, collaborator and a systems change agent.

28. Performs other duties as assigned.

LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: Per the negotiated Wells-Ogunquit Teacher Association agreement

COMPENSATION: Per the negotiated Wells-Ogunquit Teacher Association agreement

REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or designee
