PROGRAM/AQUATICS ASSISTANT

General Definition and Conditions of Work:

Performs responsible professional and administrative work assisting with the planning and implementation of community programs and in the operation and maintenance of a swimming pool, including various aquatics programs; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

Assisting with the planning and implementation of various leisure, recreation, and aquatic programs; coordinating facility use; preparing and maintaining files and records; preparing reports.

Planning and supervising programs, scheduling programs and events; registering participants; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Assist with the planning and supervision of aquatic programs; scheduling programs and events; registering participants; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Assist with the development, implementation, planning and scheduling of various leisure, and aquatic programs.

Develops, implements, plans and schedules various leisure and recreational programs.

Maintains department's inventory of necessary equipment and materials.

Assist with the supervision of all phases of the program's operations.

Assist with the supervision of all phases of the aquatic operations

Assist with the monitoring of water chemistry efficiently and correctly using approved testing methods; monitors chemical inventory to assure continuous and uninterrupted usage.

Assist with the supervision of staff monitoring swimmers and ensuring their safety by enforcing the rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Assist in the supervision and participate in opening, cleaning and closing the pool and its facilities.

Carries out/oversees daily opening and closing operations and pool rental sessions.

Effectively supervises the concessions operations, performs specialized work as it pertains to concession operations and maintenance.

Teaches certified courses to staff and the public.

Prepares and edits social media pages; participates as a member of department teams; promotes programs and activities through media sources, public speaking and public distribution.

Designs, implements and manages the operation and preventative maintenance plan for the locker rooms, water treatment control systems, filtration systems, associated pool equipment and concessions equipment.

Meets with community groups, citizen organizations and local schools to coordinate and promote community pools, programs, and services; identify community needs and respond to concerns.

Performs related task as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

General knowledge of the principles and practices of professional recreation work; general knowledge of one or more phases of community activities; ability to schedule and coordinate a program; ability to provide working leadership to a group of participants; ability to prepare reports; skill in the use of instruments, tools or other equipment used in programs; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, activity participants and the general public. General knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in comprehensive community swimming pool; ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community swimming pool. Thorough knowledge of aquatic safety principles and use of safety/rescue equipment. Demonstrate sound communication skills and proven ability to supervise personnel. General knowledge of the objectives and principles of concession operations and food service practices.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school; education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or related field is preferred but not required. Minimum of at least 2 years in staff supervision.

Physical Requirements:

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken work; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current certification in American Red Cross Standard CPR and First Aid or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Must possess an Aquatic Facility Operators license or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment. Must possess SafeServ Certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
