Job Title: HIM Hospital Outpatient Coder I (Contract)
Location:
Fully Remote - Candidates must be located in the state of Hawaii, California, Oregon, or Washington.Compensation:
$38-$40/hour (W2 Contract via LHH)Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM HSTAbout the Role
We are seeking a skilled and credentialed HIM Hospital Outpatient Coder I to join our team on a contract basis. This role is ideal for professionals with strong clinical content knowledge and coding expertise who are passionate about accuracy, compliance, and collaboration in healthcare documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Review medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
Assign appropriate codes and select DRGs for inpatient cases.
Abstract and verify medical data to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards (JCAHO, OSHPD, CMS).
Interact with physicians to clarify documentation and sequencing of diagnoses/procedures.
Organize and prioritize work to meet productivity and quality standards.
Participate in documentation audits and support physician compliance initiatives.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold coding ethics and corporate compliance standards.
Act as a resource for coding-related inquiries from other departments.Required Qualifications
Certifications: CCS or CPC (must be active); CCA with eligibility for CCS, RHIT, or RHIA.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of continuous hospital coding/abstracting experience within the last 5 years, including 1 year as a certified coder.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of coursework in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, ICD-10/CPT coding conventions, and disease processes from an accredited program.
Systems Knowledge: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Experience with EPIC is preferred.
Skills: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, ability to understand clinical content, and effective communication with physicians.Additional Requirements
Must attain a minimum score of 75% on coding assessments.
Maintain current coding credentials and complete at least 10 CE units annually.
