Job Title: I&C Commissioning Technician Location: Columbus, OH (Ohio State University) Duration: 4+ months Rate: $55 - $60/hour - 1.5X OT Per Diem: $186/day Hours: 60 hours per week.
Project: Combined Heat and Power Plant Overview: We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Commissioning Technician to support commissioning activities on a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant.
The successful candidate will be responsible for testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and verifying proper operation of plant instrumentation and control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient startup of the facility.
Responsibilities: Perform installation checks, loop checks, and function tests on field instrumentation, control valves, transmitters, analyzers, and related I&C devices.
Support the commissioning of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Balance of Plant (BOP) control systems.
Calibrate and verify instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement devices.
Troubleshoot wiring, terminations, and communication issues between field instruments and control systems.
Document test results, maintain commissioning records, and prepare turnover packages.
Work with commissioning engineers and operations teams to ensure systems are ready for safe startup and operation.
Provide technical support during performance testing and system optimization.
Adhere to site safety procedures and participate in toolbox talks and permit-to-work systems.
Qualifications: Technical degree, trade certification, or equivalent experience in Instrumentation, Controls, or Electrical Engineering.
Prior experience commissioning I&C systems on power plants, CHP facilities, or other industrial energy projects.
Familiarity with DCS and PLC control systems (Siemens, ABB, Emerson, or equivalent). Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, and electrical schematics.
Strong troubleshooting skills and hands-on experience with instrumentation calibration equipment.
Knowledge of plant startup and commissioning practices, including permit-to-work and lockout/tagout procedures.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary commissioning team.
