The Savannah River National Laboratory's Advanced Manufacturing & Design Group seeks to fill several technical intern positions to support innovative research and development in the area of additive manufacturing.
Responsibilities
The successful candidates would provide research support to the polymer and/or metal Additive Manufacturing Team on one or more of these key projects:
Discover the cutting-edge field of 3D printing with new chemistries to create high-performance materials and explore the effect of formulation on final material properties such as mechanical strength, energy dissipation, and aging in extreme environments.
Investigate the applicability of rotational rheology and temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for rapid measurement of properties relevant to the laser-based powder bed fusion and fused filament fabrication modalities of additive manufacturing.
Build on previous SRNL work to further characterize 3D printed composites, probe the limits of composite composition ratio with respect to both printing and final part properties, and explore AM of other polymer composites such as pre-ceramic materials.
Explore flow chemistry as a potentially suitable pathway for in-house synthesis of specialty polymeric materials for AM applications.
Work with assigned mentor and Additive Manufacturing Team members to understand work processes and scope of project.
Perform work safely using the Safe Conduct of Research Principles.
Provide accurate, detailed, and timely written updates and reports associated with work scope.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Pursuing an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, material science and engineering or a relevant field
Must be a U.S. citizen.
GPA 2.5
Preferred Qualifications
It is preferred that the candidate have prior experience in additive manufacturing (3D printing), characterization equipment, and general chemistry lab experience.
