Description:

Job Description Software Engineer @ Calidar Calidar is a Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC-based medical device startup developing the world's first X-ray diffraction-based imaging system, a 4D Mammography device.

We are building our clinical hardware and the engineering systems that support it.

We're looking for a Software Engineer who's excited to own critical work in a fast-moving environment, design systems from scratch, and build software that directly affects clinical outcomes.

You'll be a core contributor on a small, multidisciplinary team where every engineer's work is visible and matters.

What you build, ships.

Responsibilities * Develop and maintain firmware for motion control and sensor acquisition.

* Implement and tune closed-loop motor control algorithms for precision positioning.

* Design and build embedded communication interfaces between microcontroller and motion controller subsystems.

* Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to support new PCB assemblies and integrated subsystems.

* Write and maintain software requirements, design documentation, and unit and integration test specifications and records consistent with IEC 62304 and QMS requirements.

* Build scripts for system calibration, debugging, data logging, and bench testing.

* Contribute to software risk management documentation and failure mode analysis.

* Support design reviews, code reviews, and V&V planning.

* Participate in defining software architecture.

* Maintain and improve the development environment: build system, version control practices, and automated test infrastructure.

Qualifications * Experience writing embedded C/C++ for microcontrollers.

* Hands-on experience with real-time operating systems.

* Experience interfacing with common motion control protocols and hardware.

* Solid understanding of motor control fundamentals: stepper motor driving, encoder feedback, closed-loop positioning.

* Strong documentation habits: clear inline comments, version-controlled code, and concise technical write-ups.

* Ability to independently scope, design, and deliver embedded software features.

* Clear communication on progress, risks, and limitations.

* 4 years of relevant software experience.

Preferred Qualifications * Experience with IEC 62304-compliant software development processes or other regulated-environment software practices.

* Familiarity with DICOM file handling.

* Prior exposure to X-ray or other imaging system hardware.

* Ability to read schematics and PCB layouts.

* Experience using COTS components to support software design inputs.

* Experience in a startup or small, multidisciplinary engineering team environment.

Why Calidar * Equity stake in a pre-commercial company with a clear path to market.

* Meaningful ownership of firmware/software work that ships into clinical settings.

* Early-stage impact: you'll shape the systems, processes, and architecture from the beginning.

* Mentorship from experienced engineers in a tight-knit team.

* An open-room culture and workspace: real-time collaboration, direct feedback, and exposure to all functions of a growing medical device startup.

Logistics * Location: Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC.

In-person, on-site.

* Type: Full-time employee (FTE), 40 hours per week.

* Travel: occasional and infrequent; not a regular part of the role.

* Sponsorship: not available for this role.

Company Description At Calidar, we are building next-generation X-ray diffraction imaging to reveal molecular-level signatures of disease.

Our patented 4D Mammography technology measures these signatures from the breast noninvasively, providing a new dimension of data with the goal of earlier, more accurate diagnosis of breast cancer.
