Job Summary

To be fully engaged in the following State Certified 3 Yr. 6000-hour hands-on training program. The training curriculum will be work-based and provides you with hands-on experience in a structured environment.

This program is approved by Mississippi Apprenticeship Program (MAP) which operates under the DOL. Online classes will be mandatory and will be carried out during normal business hours. Due to the significant investment by Tegra Medical and the selected individual, a letter of understanding will be drawn up and signed by both parties.

The Precision Machinist Apprentice will have mentor assistance from trained Dept. Lead Tech’s, Engineers, Operators, and work colleagues and will utilize the various operations performed in production as it pertains to training value. The hands-on-training program is designed towards career development and advancement leading to acquiring the skills necessary to operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines, including CNC Swiss style lathes, CNC lathes and CNC milling machines & manual machining. Set-up/Operate and Program CNC equipment and perform any other functions within the department that may be necessary.

Role and Responsibilities

Operate CNC machines including CNC Swiss style lathes, CNC lathes, CNC milling machines, etc.

Review set up sheets and specs to understand machining sequence and dimensions of finished work piece.

Work from procedures and prescribed operation sequences to achieve parts per print and quality specifications.

Adjust as needed tool offsets, guide bushing tension etc. monitoring process for tool conditions, burrs and surface finishes.

Assemble cutting tools in tool holders and position in machine spindles as specified, using hand tools, or insert cutting tools in specified machine magazines.

Ensure workpiece is being properly lubricated and cooled.

Produce quality parts.

Monitor, observe and listen to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.

Notify supervisor of discrepancies.

Perform own part inspection during machining process to measure workpiece to check to match specs, using measuring instruments such as microscope, optical comparator, micrometer, caliper, dial indicators and gauges.

Achieve designated training hours in Tooling U (RI) online manufacturing training.

Simultaneous to CNC machining operation, perform a variety of secondary operations as required.

Machine materials other than metal, such as composites, plastic, and rubber.

Qualifications

Experience in a small device manufacturing environment as a CNC Machining Operator or machining background is a plus.

Experience operating Mazak, Makino, Star is desired, or other CNC Turning Centers & CNC equipment is a plus.

Experience in medical device manufacturing, aerospace, machinery, metals a plus. Must be able to read blueprints, drawings, specifications, and quality plans and have strong oral and written communication skills.

Follow written and verbal instructions and capable of meeting deadlines. Can be self-motivated.

Good manual dexterity and ability to use measurement and inspection tools.

Good work habits, strong workmanship and a positive attitude are required as well as an ability, desire, and flexibility to perform a variety of machining operations and other functions within manufacturing as needed.

Education Requirements

H.S. Diploma or equivalent is preferred. Graduate of a vocational school in manufacturing/machining or engineering discipline is a plus.
