Job Summary:
Substation Designer creates technical drawings and 3D models for electrical utility infrastructure, focusing on layout, physical design, and Protection & Control (P&C) systems. Using CAD (AutoCAD/Inventor) and BIM software, they ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI standards for high-voltage substation.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Use 3D computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software and work closely with engineers to resolve design details or discrepancies, and to prepare drawings which require a high degree of precision on projects of basic complexity and/or scope; Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, data, verbal or written specifications, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and other matrices to support drafting and design activities; Provide routine technical design assistance that accounts for the proper illustration, fit form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerance and quantity calculations, while ensuring the constructability and maintainability of designs according to design standard specifications; Assist with verifying calculations, designs, change orders, interpretation of contract plans and specifications, recognizing basic construction or engineering problems and escalating any differences, errors, or technical problems for appropriate resolution; Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work; Assure plans adhere to clients' standards and requests and meet minimum federal regulations; Prepare multiple versions of designs for review by engineer; Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements; Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Basic or Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or the Equivalent; Minimum of 5 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior drafting and design support experience with working knowledge of CADD software, including MicroStation and/or AutoCAD and parametric modeling tools such as Inventor, SolidWorks, or Revit; Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, process, methods and techniques; Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements; Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as being part of a team to meet business objectives. Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
• CADD certification diploma or Associate's Degree closely related discipline with CADD courses included in curriculum
Working Conditions:
• Work is primarily conducted in an office environment (Private or Semi-Private Office) but also requires occasional travel to off-site work locations;
• Field duties require outdoor work in a construction site type atmosphere;
• Interaction with other team members, as well as supervisors and client personnel;
• Working on a construction site or in plant and/or shop areas around production machinery with extreme noise levels
• Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection;
• May be at more than one job site in a day and must be able to tolerate climate changes;
• May be required to travel out of town on a periodic basis.

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits employee to communicate effectively;
