LEARN, Southeastern Connecticut's Regional Educational Service Center, invites candidates to apply for a Substitute Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher opening at the Creating Connections Early Learning Center in Waterford, Connecticut.
General Scope of Responsibilities
The Substitute Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher provides temporary classroom coverage in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher supports the implementation of a high-quality educational program by following established lesson plans and daily routines, maintaining a safe and nurturing classroom environment, and fostering positive relationships with children and staff. The Substitute Teacher helps maintain continuity of care and instruction while supporting developmentally appropriate practices.
Relationship within the Organization
The Substitute Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher reports directly to the ECE Site Coordinator and/or designated Head Teacher for the assignment day.
Specific Responsibilities
Program Development & Implementation
Implement lesson plans and daily routines prepared by the classroom teacher or Site Coordinator.
Support and implement developmentally appropriate activities that meet the physical, emotional, social, and educational needs of children aged six weeks to three years.
Foster a positive and engaging classroom environment that supports children's development and learning.
Assist in maintaining daily schedules, transitions, and classroom routines.
Provide guidance and support to children to promote positive behavior and social-emotional development.
Compliance & Safety
Always maintain appropriate supervision and ratios of children in classroom, outdoor, and meal settings.
Follow all Center policies, Connecticut Office of Early Childhood licensing regulations, health and safety standards, and NAEYC accreditation guidelines.
Monitor classroom environment and materials to ensure safe and appropriate use.
Report any safety concerns, incidents, or injuries immediately to the Site Coordinator or Head Teacher.
Communication & Family Engagement
Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor when interacting with children, families, and staff.
Refer family questions or concerns to the regular classroom teacher, head teacher or Site Coordinator.
Communicate relevant observations about children's activities or behaviors to classroom staff or site coordinator as appropriate.
Staff Supervision & Support
Collaborate with classroom teacher/support staff to maintain classroom routines and safety standards.
Follow guidance and direction from the Site Coordinator or Head Teacher during the assignment.
Record Keeping & Documentation
Complete classroom documentation as requested (e.g., attendance, incident reports, or daily logs).
Follow established procedures for documenting incidents or concerns.
Professional Development
Attend required substitute orientation or training sessions as provided by the Center.
Participate in additional training as requested for long-term substitute assignments.
Additional Responsibilities
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field with a minimum of 12 credits in Early Childhood Education or ECTC (Early Childhood Teacher Credential) Associate level.
Infant/Child CPR and First Aid certification.
Medication Administration and Epi-Pen Training.
