Work Arrangement: Remote: This role is based remotely, but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, or Mountain View, you are expected to report to that location a minimum of three times per week.
The Role
Join our AV Safety Data Analytics team as we revolutionize quantitative safety modeling capabilities for automated driving systems! We are looking for a talented Safety Modeling Engineer to spearhead the development of innovative driver behavior models aimed at establishing human performance benchmarks essential for safety evaluations.
Your responsibilities include integrating domain expertise to design and build statistical and machine learning models leveraging large-scale real and simulated driving datasets to effectively represent human driving behavior in critical safety scenarios. You will define behavioral benchmarks, contribute to safety performance metrics, and incorporate these models into evaluation pipelines that guide safety assessments and decision-making across our automated driving systems.
This role calls for exceptional analytical skills, modeling intuition, and practical judgment. You will have a significant impact on how human reference behavior is defined and utilized across our safety programs.
What You'll Do
Develop driver behavior models that accurately represent human response in safety-critical scenarios.
Create robust statistical and machine learning models using large-scale driving and simulation datasets.
Analyze data to derive meaningful behavioral benchmarks and safety performance metrics.
Construct scalable modeling pipelines and effective data workflows.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate modeling results into actionable safety evaluation methods.
Contribute to comprehensive safety assessments and create safety case evidence.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor's or higher degree in Engineering, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.
Expertise in human performance, capabilities, perception, response, and behaviors.
Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, as well as data visualization skills.
Experience with DevOps and Infrastructure as Code, including CI/CD, versioning, Docker & Kubernetes, GitHub, Jira, Jenkins, Poetry, and Terraform.
Experience analyzing perception, planning, and control outputs.
Solid experience in developing statistical or machine learning models through large datasets.
Experience with behavioral modeling, human performance analysis, or simulation-based analytics.
Proven ability to analyze cross-disciplinary challenges and propose practical modeling solutions.
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Effective communication skills to convey technical results to cross-functional stakeholders.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant technical field.
Relevant publications in the field.
Experience specifically with driver behavior modeling or human performance benchmarking.
Familiarity with causal inference or counterfactual modeling techniques.
Understanding of simulation-based evaluations or scenario analysis.
Experience working with cloud or distributed data platforms.
Impact
Your contributions will define how human driver behavior is modeled and used as a benchmark for automated driving safety, significantly influencing safety benchmarks, evaluation methods, and product decision-making.
Note: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will have the opportunity to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, where you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Program participants must purchase or lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless specified exceptions apply.
GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Please do not apply if you require GM sponsorship now or in the future.
This role is not eligible for relocation benefits; any relocation costs will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
