Job Description

Vocational Nursing Instructor

The Vocational Nursing Instructor is responsible for the instruction and supervision of students, ensuring compliance with school policies, and maintaining professional standards in both classroom and clinical settings.

Education and Experience Requirements

General Minimum Qualifications

Option 1: Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience.

Option 2: Associate Degree and six years of experience.

Specific Licensure Requirements

(A) Registered Nurse (RN)

Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse.

Education/Teaching (Meet one of the following):

Advanced degree from an approved school.

Valid teaching credential.

Minimum of one-year full-time teaching experience in a state-approved RN, VN, or PN school within the last five years.

Met community college or state university teaching requirements in California.

Clinical Experience: Have a minimum of two years’ experience as an RN or LVN within the last five years.

(B) Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Hold a current California active license as a Vocational Nurse.

Education/Teaching (Meet one of the following):

Advanced degree from an approved school.

Valid teaching credential.

Minimum of one-year full-time teaching experience in a state-approved RN, VN, or PN school within the last five years.

Met community college or state university teaching requirements in California.

Clinical Experience: Have a minimum of two years’ experience as a vocational nurse within the last five years.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Student Support

Participate in the instruction of students and provide a thorough orientation for students entering the classroom.

Provide academic support to students experiencing difficulty through tutoring, remediation, and guidance.

Follow the syllabus provided by Career Care Institute, delivering instruction in accordance with prescribed course objectives, content, and schedule.

Routinely review exams, tests, and (if applicable) quizzes on a weekly basis.

Provide progress reports for students on a regular basis.

Maintain expertise in the field and demonstrate all training procedures.

Compliance and School Policy

Uphold and enforce school policies, including student dress code, attendance (absences/tardiness), and academic progress.

Address and document student conduct violations.

Familiarize yourself thoroughly with school policy via the CCI catalog, handbook, and VN guidelines.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements, as well as Career Care Institute policies, rules, syllabi, and lesson plans.

Monitor student activities, breaks, and physical facilities for safety and regulatory compliance.

Ensure continuous supervision of students at all times in both classroom and clinical settings.

Discourage classroom disruptions or engaging in excessive talking regarding non-school related issues.

Avoid using personal electronic devices and having food/drinks (other than bottled water) in the classroom/clinical setting.

Administrative and Professional Conduct

Cooperate with the Campus Director, Assistant Campus Director, Receptionist, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Services, Career Services, Faculty, and advisory board members.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of class; clock in/out accordingly for shifts and breaks.

Open and close classrooms as assigned and use designated prep time to prepare for class in advance.

Attend all staff meetings and participate in instructor evaluations by completing self-evaluations and reviewing feedback.

Document all private discussions with students using tools such as incident reports, progress reports, and/or Student Advisement Forms.

Provide weekly audit reports and report any major problems to the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, or Human Resources.

Monitor inventory to ensure adequate supplies, place orders in advance, and coordinate with the Clinical Coordinator.

Demonstrate professional behavior and demeanor at all times with students and CCI staff.

Ensure confidentiality in all matters concerning staff and students.

Leave and Attendance

Provide notice of extended leave 30 days in advance.

To the extent reasonable, prepare for all planned leave, provide lesson plans for absences, and coordinate with the Director and Assistant Director of Nursing.

Instructors must not use sick time to free themselves for employment elsewhere.

Instructors are prohibited from using their authority to influence students in favor of personal interests or to undermine school administration decisions.

Physical Requirements and Health Documentation

Physical Demands

Be able to stand on feet for extended periods of time.

Be able to turn, lift, and transfer patients.

Demonstrate the physical ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, including handling patients and/or equipment safely.

Be able to perform the above duties without limitations which might cause injury to themselves, students, or clients.

Required Health Records (On File)

Maintain current CPR/BLS card and/or instructor card.

Annual physical.

Annual negative skin test or biannual negative chest x-ray for TB.

Titers showing immunity to MMR and Varicella.

Titer showing immunity to Hepatitis B or signed/dated declination waiver.

Current influenza vaccine and current COVID vaccination (including digital card containing all doses).

Qualifications and Skills

Management / Leadership Experience.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills required.

Ability to work in a team and work independently required.

Ability to manage stressful situations effectively and maintain emotional regulation.

Detail-oriented and well-organized.

Positive attitude required.
