Job Description

Position Summary: Responsible for inspecting, verifying, and documenting welding activities performed in both fabrication shop and field installation environments, including HVAC and mechanical piping systems. This position ensures welding operations comply with applicable codes, standards, approved welding procedures, project specifications, and the company Quality Management System (QMS). The Certified Welder Inspector (CWI) plays a critical role in supporting fabrication, erection, and installation activities to ensure weld quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities and Duties:

· Perform visual inspection of welds during fabrication and field installation activities

· Inspect HVAC, carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel piping and structural components as applicable

· Verify joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, preheat, inter-pass temperature, welding technique, and completed welds

· Monitor welding activities before, during, and after welding operations in shop and field settings

· Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards, including but not limited to AWS D1.1, AWS D1.6, ASME Section IX (Welding and Brazing Qualifications), ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.9, project specifications, client requirements, and applicable mechanical codes

· Review and verify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) for compliance and applicability

· Review, verify, and maintain welding qualification records in accordance with ASME Section IX and applicable AWS requirements

· Ensure welders are properly qualified for the process, position, material, and thickness range being welded

· Maintain accurate, complete, and traceable inspection documentation, reports, and logs for shop and field work

· Coordinate, witness, and review NDT activities as required (RT, UT, MT, PT)

· Review NDT reports and verify corrective actions for rejected welds

· Ensure NDT activities align with applicable code, specification, and acceptance criteria

· Identify weld defects, nonconformances, and deviations from approved procedures

· Document nonconformances and coordinate corrective actions with fabrication and field supervision

· Verify repair procedures, rework, and re-inspection activities meet applicable acceptance criteria

· Support internal and external audits related to welding qualifications, procedures, and inspection activities

· Assist in the continuous improvement of welding inspection practices across shop and field operations

· Provide technical input to Quality Management and Operations leadership

· Communicate inspection findings clearly and professionally with project managers, superintendents, foremen, engineers, and client

· Conduct scheduled and unscheduled weld inspections in shop and field environments

· Verify welder qualifications and WPS compliance prior to welding

· Participate in coordination meetings and provide real-time quality feedback

· All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

· Experience/Qualifications Required:

o Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification

o Minimum 3–5 years welding inspection experience in shop fabrication and/or field installation, preferably HVAC or mechanical piping systems

o Demonstrated working knowledge of ASME Section IX qualification requirements, ASME piping systems (B31.1, B31.3, B31.9), and AWS structural welding requirements

o Experience inspecting common welding processes: GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW

o Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, construction drawings, isometrics, weld symbols, and welding procedures

· Preferred Qualifications:

o Additional certifications (AWS, ASME, API, or NDT Level II)

o Experience in industrial or commercial mechanical and HVAC projects

o Knowledge of local and state mechanical codes

o Familiarity with shop fabrication workflows and field erection constraints

o Certified welding experience is performed

· Job Skills:

Education:

o Minimum of High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

o Trade school a plus.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in fabrication shops and active construction sites

Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and work in confined spaces as required

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform inspections for extended periods

Willingness to travel to job sites as needed

Special Requirements:

· Valid Driver’s License
