Security Associate I
Job Summary
Performs a variety of activities to ensure the safety and security of staff and the public under the direction of the Branch Manager.
Core Job Functions
Greets and welcomes customers and provides directions and/or refers them to appropriate staff members
Monitors customer behavior and enforces Library rules
Assists staff and customers in situations relating to safety and security
Conducts inside and outside patrol checks on a regular basis
Locks and secures the building at closing
Writes security reports
Functions as liaison to police and court system
Facilitates meeting room and facility use
Monitors security cameras
Reports unsafe building conditions to a supervisor
Participates in workshops or trainings as requested
May:
Participate in branch or system wide work teams
Assist customers with copier and printers
Assist with training new staff on security camera use
Performs other duties and participates in special projects, as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Technological systems and their uses as described under Level 4 – Specialized Technology Competency (see Technology Competencies)
Safety and security procedures
Ability to:
Learn St. Mary’s County Library policies and procedures
Communicate effectively with colleagues, Library trustees, local government elected and appointed officials, community leaders, vendors, and citizens
Operate relevant computer systems (including hardware and software), current audio-visual equipment, and office machines
Learn security camera software specific to the Library
Use common sense and good judgement
Travel throughout the system and community, work a variety of schedules that include evenings and weekends, and accept system-wide transfers
Skills:
Excellent communication skills, both in writing and orally
Excellent customer service skills
Excellent decision-making and problem solving skills with emphasis on personal responsibility and willingness to deal with issues at hand
Training and/or Education
High School Diploma or GED
Experience
One or more years of security related experience is preferred.
Licenses or Certificates
None
Physical Demands
Work requires continual walking and standing.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.
