The Behavior & Training Specialist manages intake by-appointment and develops animals’ pathways through the shelter system.
Effectively and efficiently maintain adoption-driven capacity and facilitate animal pathways: managed admission, transfer, assessment, behavior modification/training, enrichment, foster care, adoption, euthanasia.
Work under the guidance of the Manager of Animal Behavior to ensure the integrity of SBH’s behavior program, Socially Conscious Sheltering, and Fear-Free® animal handling.
Counsel clients considering pet relinquishment; provide advice and alternatives as appropriate; conduct animal intake appointments and assessments.
Provide training and guidance to staff and volunteers on animal behavior, safe animal handling techniques, and training plans; assign and monitor animal interactions and progress with staff and volunteers.
Counsel prospective adopters on animal selection, care, and training; conduct post-placement counseling and consultation as-needed.
Perform direct animal care, client services, and shelter operational support tasks as assigned.
Support Philanthropy & Outreach Department with animals at off-site events.
Work collaboratively and under the general direction of the Director of Dog Training to assist with public dog training: provide general client service; perform private
consultations and training; instruct or serve as assistant during group classes and workshops.
Participate on committees as assigned.
