Job Description

About SHP

At SHP, we design more than just buildings - we create experiences that inspire people to learn, work, and connect. With a legacy that spans over 120 years, SHP is a nationally recognized architecture and engineering firm committed to shaping environments that positively impact communities and improve lives.

Our work is driven by purpose, fueled by curiosity, and built on collaboration. From visionary schools and innovative workplaces to civic and cultural spaces, we approach every project with creativity, technical excellence, and a deep commitment to sustainability and inclusion.

We're proud to offer a workplace culture that values people as much as process. At SHP, you'll find a team that supports your growth, challenges your thinking, and celebrates your contributions. Whether you're designing, engineering, managing, or supporting our projects, your work will matter - and so will you.

Join us, and help shape what's next.

The Opportunity

SHP is seeking an Interior Designer to join our collaborative design team. This role is ideal for designers early in their career or those with a few years of professional experience who are excited to contribute to meaningful projects and continue developing their design and technical skills.

Depending on experience, you will support or lead portions of the interior design process across multiple projects, working alongside Interior Designers, Project Architects, and Project Managers to create thoughtful, functional, and inspiring environments.

This position offers the opportunity to build a strong design foundation while gaining exposure to all phases of project delivery, from early programming and concept development through construction administration.

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to interior design efforts across multiple projects and project phases.

Support or lead portions of design work including space planning, finish development, and FF&E selections.

Develop and prepare drawings, schedules, specifications, renderings, and presentation materials.

Collaborate with Project Architects, Project Managers, and multidisciplinary team members to coordinate interior and architectural design solutions.

Participate in design discussions, internal critiques, and client meetings related to interior design scope.

Assist with or contribute to interior documentation and technical detailing.

Coordinate with consultants, vendors, and manufacturers as needed.

Continue developing knowledge of materials, codes, accessibility standards, and documentation practices.

Contribute curiosity, creativity, and a collaborative mindset to the design process.

Key Requirements

Experience

Entry-level to mid-level experience in interior design, including internships, co-ops, or professional roles within an architecture or design firm.

Exposure to multiple phases of design and project delivery preferred.

Design & Technical Skills

Working knowledge of Revit, Adobe Creative Suite and Enscape.

Strong interest or experience in space planning, material selection, and interior environments.

Familiarity with FF&E processes, documentation standards, and detailing is beneficial.

Growing understanding of building codes and accessibility standards.

Collaboration & Mindset

Curious, organized, and receptive to feedback.

Comfortable working within multidisciplinary teams.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

Clear communicator who can explain design ideas and incorporate feedback.

Education & Credentials

Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture from an accredited program required.

Interest in or progress toward NCIDQ certification preferred.

Familiarity with sustainable design principles is a plus.

Location & Travel Expectations

This role is based in one of our physical office locations - Cincinnati or Columbus, OH - and is ideal for candidates who thrive in a highly collaborative, in person environment. Being onsite allows for deeper day to day engagement with peers and project teams, faster decision making, and organic moments of creativity and mentorship that emerge through shared space.

At the same time, many of our most meaningful opportunities-client-facing and internal-happen beyond the walls of the office. Travel is a key part of how we build relationships, gather insight from the people we design for, and bring our ideas to life alongside clients and partners. Whether it's participating in discovery sessions, facilitating workshops, or gaining on the ground understanding of a project's context, travel enables us to show up where it matters.

Candidates for this role should be willing and able to travel as needed, often with short notice, to support firmwide priorities, strengthen client connections, and grow their impact across markets. We view this flexibility as a way to expand visibility, build trust, and access the kind of hands-on experiences that fuel career growth.

SHP is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
