Job Summary
The Librarian, Reference & Instruction guides a community of students, faculty, and staff to access information with critical insight via individual reference assistance, group instruction, and guides (print and online). This position collaborates with librarians and staff to provide user-centered services and spaces for learning and research.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instructional & Faculty Support
Visits classes to teach information literacy and research using activity-based learning and evidence-informed pedagogical strategies
Leads workshops and participates in new student orientations and college programs. Guides learners in developing critical thinking and information literacy skills, including identifying, locating, evaluating, and effectively using information across diverse formats
Designs and implements instructional tutorials and materials, continuously integrating best practices in teaching and information literacy
Partners with faculty as an information literacy subject-matter expert to design instruction aligned with course curricula, research assignments, and student readiness
Consults on the development of pedagogically sound library research assignments
Provides library instruction at off-campus sites
Manages a designated section of the library collection, including selecting, evaluating, and weeding print and electronic resources, and overseeing the associated budget to ensure alignment with instructional and curricular needs Customer Service & Reference Support
Provides reference and research support to students, faculty, and staff, fostering critical thinking and information literacy
Guides students in selecting and refining research topics, evaluating and synthesizing sources, and developing strategic search approaches
Supports ethical and effective use of information, including citation, copyright, and proper attribution, empowering students to think critically and independently throughout the research process
Promotes library services and programs through library-hosted events, campus activities, social media, and written communications
Engages the campus community to raise awareness of resources and services and provides input on the development of reference guidelines and procedures Continuous Development, Technology & Program Support
Actively engages in professional development through trainings, workshops, and conferences to stay current with trends and best practices in librarianship and information literacy instruction
Contributes to the development and maintenance of the library website, including webpages, online research guides, and other publications
Records and analyzes statistics for reference and instruction sessions, and participates in library assessment activities Culture of Respect
Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Attends all required department meetings and training
Communicates any concerns related to building operations to the appropriate contacts
Monitors computer equipment used to access library information
Contact IT support if service is needed for non-functional equipment
Serves on library and College committees
Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required *Evening Role - Hours specifically from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Thursday
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience working in a library reference position or a related field *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify a candidate
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s) *CSCC has the right to revise this position description at any time. This position description does not represent in any way a contract of employment
