Job Description
Company Overview
We are a premier, AISC-certified structural steel fabrication and machining leader based in Grove City, Ohio. We specialize in high-precision steel components and assemblies for commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects throughout the Midwest. Our culture is built on three pillars: craftsmanship, accuracy, and responsiveness.
Position Summary
We are seeking a results-driven Quoting / Estimating Specialist to scale our estimating capacity and win rate. This is not a "behind-the-desk-only" role; it is a high-impact hybrid of technical takeoff and proactive customer engagement.
You will own the quoting lifecycle—from interpreting complex blueprints to negotiating scope with General Contractors and Engineers. The ideal candidate balances a deep understanding of fabrication realities with the "soft skills" required to build relationships and close deals.
Top Priorities & Key Responsibilities
Precision Estimating: Perform detailed takeoffs and interpret blueprints/bid packages for structural steel and fabricated assemblies.
Strategic Communication: Actively collaborate with GCs, engineers, and customers to clarify scope, offer value-engineering solutions, and follow up on submitted bids.
Process Optimization: Refine internal estimating tools, Excel templates, and ERP integrations (Genius ERP) to increase throughput and accuracy.
Internal Synergy: Partner with Engineering, Purchasing, and Production to validate manufacturability and refine labor/material assumptions.
Data-Driven Growth: Analyze historical job performance and "hit rates" to sharpen pricing models and competitiveness.
Experience & Background Targets
Industry Tenure: 5–10 years of estimating experience specifically within structural steel, miscellaneous metals, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
Technical Literacy: Mastery of blueprint reading, shop routing, welding processes, and machining/finishing requirements.
Software Proficiency: Advanced Excel skills and experience with digital takeoff/ERP systems (e.g., Genius ERP, Tekla EPM, FabSuite).
Market Knowledge: Familiarity with AISC standards and public project bidding (AISC/BABA compliance) is a significant plus.
The Ideal Profile
The "Player-Coach" Mentality: You are comfortable doing the "heavy lifting" of takeoffs today, with the ambition to lead the department as it expands.
The Problem Solver: You enjoy the "puzzle" of pricing and can find the middle ground between a competitive bid and a profitable job.
The Communicator: You possess a strong sense of urgency and aren't afraid to pick up the phone to move a project forward.
Performance Objectives (First 12 Months)
Boost Throughput: Increase quoting volume by 25% through improved workflows.
Velocity: Substantially reduce turnaround time for small-to-mid-sized quotes.
Analytics: Implement a tracking system for "hit rates" and quote follow-ups via ERP/CRM.
Relationship Building: Establish a rapport with key accounts that leads to increased repeat-bid opportunities.
Automation: Assist in the rollout of quoting automation tools to streamline the front-end office.
