Role Description
Leads the Simon Kenton Council’s Safeguarding Youth efforts while acting as the subject matter expert and provides leadership across council operations, task forces, and external partners. The Safety Manager will collaborate with staff and volunteers to promote and enhance a strong safety culture while ensuring a safe and secure environment for all participants and stakeholders. Daily responsibilities include conducting safety training, investigating accidents, and inspecting facilities for hazards.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategy & Safety Culture
Develop and implement local safeguarding youth strategies in alignment and collaboration with the National office and Scouting America’s policies.
Communicate and support safety standards across all council programs and camps with a focus on prevention.
Incident Review & Compliance
Analyze incident data and implement risk mitigation with the support of the National Safeguarding and Environmental Health & Safety Teams.
Promote incident reporting and engage external experts for program reviews.
Expertise & Leadership
Serve as internal and external Safeguarding Youth leader.
Advise committees, build partnerships, and shape safe participation frameworks.
Participate in policy, legal, and training decisions.
Essential Functions:
Collaborate with leadership to build upon our safety culture.
Assess risks in Scouting programs, properites, & facilities and implement safety improvements.
Educate and motivate staff and volunteers on youth protection.
Competencies:
Knowledge: Child abuse laws, youth development, safety regulations.
Skills: Teamwork, conflict management, communication, risk assessment.
Abilities: Trust-building, confidentiality, adaptability, working with diverse groups.
Communication: Deliver in-person and virtual briefings to unit level leaders and Council boards.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s in a related field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology).
6+ years in youth protection, child services, or law enforcement.
Compensation:
All BSA councils are equal opportunity employers. Salary will be commensurate with experience with a salary range $60,000 to $75,000. Additionally, the Simon Kenton Council offers benefits to include major medical, prescription coverage, dental, vision, life-insurance, short and long-term disability, accidental death, a Match Savings program, and is eligible for 15 days of vacation.
