As an Associate on the Origination desk within National Bank's Commodity Derivatives team in Calgary, you will provide support in financial modeling, commodity research, and engage with internal and external stakeholders to maintain strong relationships and cultivate business opportunities.

The successful candidate will be client focused, highly motivated, and have a strong desire to learn the complexities of the energy market.

Your Job

Engage with diverse clients to manage bank relationships, price, and execution of derivatives transactions for energy commodities such as crude oil, refined products, natural gas, and natural gas liquids

Assist with fundamental commodity research for internal use and client distribution

Create and maintain detailed visualizations, including client presentations and pitch books, utilizing reporting components from multiple data sources

Stay up to date with macro-economic and energy trends, industry news and attend relevant events as required

Maintain and foster existing and new business relationships and cultivate revenue and growth opportunities

Support the Origination team on client coverage initiatives and generating client strategies

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with bank policy regarding risk limits and risk appetite

Assist with ad-hoc projects and analysis as needed

Ensure compliance with all internal and external matters in accordance with banking regulations, policies, and best practices

Your Team

The National Bank Commodity Derivatives team is a Calgary-based sales and trading desk specializing in trading a broad range of physical and financial commodity derivatives in the cleared and OTC market. Our focus is on energy commodities including crude oil, refined products, natural gas and natural gas liquids. You will be part of a team of 20+ colleagues and will report to the Head of Commodities.

Basic Requirements

Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Engineering

Completion of or advancement toward completion of a professional designation such as the CFA or CPA

3-5 years of previous experience in oil and gas, banking, or commodity markets

Strong computer skills and proficiency using Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Bloomberg

Strong research skills, including sourcing and scraping data from various sources for modeling purposes

Experience with databases and data analysis in Python, demonstrating a strong aptitude for learning other analytical tools and resources

Presentation skills, with the ability to present complex information in a concise and professional manner

Strong interpersonal skills

Critical thinking with a high degree of attention to detail

Show initiative to take on additional tasks and support team members as needed

Ability to multitask and manage conflicting priorities

Proactivity and sound business judgement

Self-starter and able to complete complex tasks with limited oversight

Growth-mindset, with a strong desire for professional development in a client-focused, dynamic and fast paced environment
