About the Role
As a Veterinary Assistant, you will be an essential part of our medical team-supporting our doctors and technicians, assisting with patient care, and helping ensure every client receives a positive experience. This role is ideal for someone who is organized, compassionate, and thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist veterinarians and RVTs during exams, treatments, and procedures
Safely restrain dogs and cats for exams, diagnostics, and medical care
Prepare exam rooms, surgical areas, and treatment spaces
Collect samples (fecal, urine, blood draw if trained/delegated by DVM/RVT per Ohio law)
Perform basic animal care: feeding, walking, husbandry, cleaning, monitoring
Support surgical prep and recovery under supervision
Maintain hospital cleanliness and uphold protocols for infection control
Provide excellent client communication and education
Accurately document medical information in patient records
Assist with inventory, stocking, and equipment maintenance
Handle over-the-counter client needs and support workflow efficiency Required Skills & Qualifications (Ohio Veterinary Assistant Expectations)
Ohio does not require formal licensure for Veterinary Assistants, but Care Pet Clinic follows high professional standards. Veterinary Assistants in Ohio may perform tasks delegated by a veterinarian or RVT under appropriate supervision. Desired skills include:
Technical & Clinical Skills
Safe animal handling and restraint for both cats and dogs
Ability to obtain basic diagnostic samples (fecal, urine, ear cytology; venipuncture if trained and allowed under supervision)
Knowledge of common veterinary terminology and preventive care
Basic understanding of medications, vaccines, and veterinary products
Ability to assist with anesthesia monitoring (heart rate, resp rate, temp) under supervision
Proper cleaning/sterilization of instruments
Understanding of fear-free handling principles (preferred) Client Service & Communication Skills
Ability to clearly communicate care instructions to clients
Professional, positive, and compassionate client interaction
Strong teamwork and willingness to support all hospital departments Operational Skills
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Accurate data entry and recordkeeping
Reliability, punctuality, and strong attention to detail
Commitment to hospital safety protocols and quality standards Preferred Qualifications
At least one year experience in a veterinary hospital or animal care role
Experience supporting surgery prep/recovery
Comfort working with computers and veterinary software
