Job Purpose
The Controller is responsible for leading Onward's accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and operational scalability. This role will oversee financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting processes while partnering cross-functionally to support strategic growth. The Controller plays a critical role in building financial infrastructure that supports a fast-scaling robotics organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close
Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in accordance with GAAP
Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and financial policies
Manage cash flow, reconciliations, and treasury activities
Support budgeting and forecasting in partnership with the VP, Finance
Lead audit preparation and coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements
Evaluate and improve accounting systems, tools, and workflows to support scale
Partner with operations and supply chain teams on inventory and cost accounting

Typical Day:
Preparing, reviewing, and approving journal entries and reconciliations
Monitoring cash position and forecasting short-term liquidity needs
Partnering with department leaders on budget vs. actual analysis
Leading or preparing components of the monthly close process
Refining internal controls or documentation
Meeting with external auditors or advisors
Identifying process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability
Required Skills:
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes
Expertise in internal controls and compliance
Proficiency in ERP systems and financial software
Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
Strong organizational and project management abilities
Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment
Minimum Experience Requirements:
8+ years of progressive accounting experience
Experience overseeing audits and working with external accounting firms
Experience managing full-cycle accounting operations
Preferred Experience Requirements:
Experience in a high-growth startup or scaling organization
Background in robotics, hardware, manufacturing, or technology industries
Experience with inventory accounting and cost accounting
Experience in venture-backed or private equity-backed companies
Minimum Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Preferred Education Requirements:
Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (MBA)
