Role Overview
We are hiring a mid-level Backend Engineer to help build and maintain the services that power our platform. In this role, you will work across Java and Ruby on Rails services while helping drive reliability, scalability, and near-zero downtime across the system.
What Youll Do
Design, build, and maintain backend services and integration pipelines in Java and Ruby on Rails.
Implement and evolve data feeds with external partners including ingestion, transformation, validation, error handling, and observability.
Develop APIs (REST/GraphQL), database interactions, background jobs, and integration adapters.
Write high-quality tests (unit and integration) and contribute to CI/CD pipelines to keep releases safe and fast.
Investigate and resolve production issues, participate in incident reviews, and drive remediation.
Improve performance, scalability, and robustness across services using caching, queueing, retries, and fault-tolerant patterns.
Work with infrastructure teams to define redundancy, monitoring, alerting, and operational runbooks that support a near-zero downtime environment.
What You Bring
5+ years of professional backend development experience with Ruby on Rails, Node, or Java.
Strong computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and pragmatic software design.
Experience designing and consuming APIs and integrating with external services and data sources.
Expertise with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MS SQL Server, including schema design and query optimization.
Familiarity with AWS services such as ECS/Lambda, S3, SQS/SNS, and RDS.
Experience working with Linux environments, containers, and CI/CD workflows.
Ability to adapt quickly and learn new services or technologies when required.
Degree in computer science or a related technical field.
Strong focus on maintainability, testability, and reliability.
Clear written and verbal communication and the ability to collaborate with distributed teams.
Nice to Have
Experience with Node.js or TypeScript for integration tooling.
Experience with message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
Familiarity with background job frameworks like Sidekiq or Resque.
Experience with observability tooling including logs, metrics, traces, and performance profiling.
Location & Work Environment
The team maintains a San Francisco office with a flexible work-from-home policy. Bay Area candidates who can collaborate in person occasionally are preferred, though strong remote candidates will be considered.
