Objective
Under general direction, plan, coordinate, and administer the City's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program. This position is responsible for the overall management, development, integration, and strategic use of GIS technologies and data across City departments. The GIS Coordinator leads program planning and implementation, establishes standards and best practices, coordinates interdepartmental and external GIS efforts, and provides advanced technical expertise and guidance. Perform related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Geographic Information Systems Coordinator is an advanced journey-level professional classification. The incumbent independently manages and coordinates the City's GIS functions and serves as the City's technical subject-matter expert for GIS applications, data integrity, and spatial analysis. This position requires the use of independent judgment, advanced technical knowledge, and the ability to translate complex spatial data into usable information for decision-makers, staff, and the public.
This class is distinguished from the GIS Specialist I/II classification in that it has primary responsibility for coordinating the City's GIS program, establishing standards and workflows, and providing Citywide support. It is further distinguished from the IT Director or Deputy IT Director classifications, which have overall responsibility for policy development and departmental administration.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, organize, and coordinate the City's GIS program to support departmental operations, public services, and strategic initiatives.
Assist with the Development and maintenance of GIS standards, policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure data integrity, consistency, and security.
Coordinate GIS activities across departments to promote effective data sharing, system integration, and efficient use of resources.
Serve as the City's primary technical expert on GIS architecture, applications, databases, and spatial data management.
Design, implement, and maintain GIS databases, applications, dashboards, and web-based mapping solutions.
Evaluate new GIS technologies, software, and tools; make recommendations regarding system enhancements and upgrades.
Lead or coordinate GIS-related projects, including scope development, timelines, and coordination with internal staff and external vendors or agencies.
Provide advanced technical support, training, and guidance to GIS users, including GIS Specialist I/II staff.
Coordinate GIS data integration with other enterprise systems, including asset management, public works, planning, public safety, and utility systems.
Prepare reports, documentation, and presentations related to GIS program performance, projects, and initiatives.
Represent the City in regional, interagency, and professional GIS meetings, collaborations, and conferences.
Perform duties of a disaster services worker in the event of an emergency.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science, Information Technology, Urban Planning, or a related field; and
Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional GIS experience, including experience with GIS system administration, application development, or program coordination. Government sector experience preferred.
Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Valid California Class C driver's license with a good driving record; and
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain an FAA Part107: Unmanned Aircraft License within twelve (12) months of appointment.
GIS Professional (GISP) Certification is highly desired.
