ABOUT THE POSITION AND OUR AGENCY The City of Carpinteria is seeking applications for a Maintenance Worker I We are looking for a dependable and motivated individual to join our Public Works team who enjoys hands-on work and takes pride in maintaining the spaces our community uses every day.

This position plays an important role in helping maintain the City's parks, facilities, and public spaces so they remain safe, clean, and welcoming for residents and the community we serve.

The Maintenance Worker I position works under direct supervision and performs field maintenance work in the maintenance and repair of streets, rights-of-way, fleet, parks, and facilities.

Incumbents perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled field maintenance duties in support of City parks, landscaped areas, facilities, streets, rights-of-way, fleet, drainage systems, and related public works infrastructure.

Although this position will primarily be assigned to Parks and Facilities, incumbents in this classification may be assigned to any operational area based on the needs of the City.

This recruitment is to fill one Maintenance Worker I vacancy primarily assigned to Parks and Facilities and to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

This position may be required to work a varied schedule, including weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: General Duties (All Assignments): * Performs field functions in the maintenance operations of streets, rights-of-way, fleet, parks, and facilities.

* Identifies maintenance needs, safety concerns, and potential improvements and reports them to supervisors.

* Performs basic field problem-solving to address maintenance tasks and service requests effectively.

* Operates hand tools, power tools, small equipment, and City vehicles safely and effectively.

* Operates equipment such as a backhoe, street sweeper, and forklift safely and effectively.

* Sets up and removes traffic control devices and follows all required safety practices.

* Works cooperatively with coworkers, other City departments, contractors, community groups, and external agencies.

* Responds to public inquiries and service requests with professionalism and provides basic information or assistance.

* Assists with event and facility setup and takedown, including moving equipment, staging materials, and preparing sites for City programs, events, and activities.

* Responds to after-hours call-outs and emergency situations as assigned.

* Inspects assigned work areas, equipment, and facilities for hazards or needed repairs.

* Completes basic written or electronic logs, forms, and work records.

* Performs related duties as assigned.

Representative Duties - Parks and Facilities Maintenance Program (As Assigned): * Performs landscape and grounds maintenance including turf care, planting, pruning, irrigation repair, weeding, and general upkeep of parks, medians, and landscaped areas.

* Operates mowers, trimmers, blowers, hedgers, chain saws, and related landscape equipment.

* Performs routine facility maintenance such as painting, minor carpentry, plumbing repairs, lighting replacement, cleaning, and graffiti removal.

* Assists with playground and facility inspections to identify hazards or maintenance needs.

* Supports custodial and facility upkeep tasks, including trash removal and restroom cleaning.

Representative Duties - Street Maintenance Program (As Assigned): * Performs maintenance and repair of streets, rights-of-way, and drainage systems including asphalt patching, concrete work, sign installation, street painting, and storm drain cleaning.

* Installs and maintains traffic control devices, barricades, and warning signs.

* Conducts vegetation management, weed abatement, litter and debris removal, and graffiti removal.

* Participates in storm response, emergency operations, debris removal, and temporary traffic control.

Representative Duties - Fleet Maintenance Program (As Assigned): Conducts regular preventative maintenance, checks, and services for City vehicles and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education/Certification: * High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate.

* Possession of or ability to obtain a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification.

* Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license.

* Must have and maintain good driving record.

Experience: * Maintenance Worker I: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance, construction, or related public works functions.

Knowledge: * Principles and practices of streets, rights-of-way, fleet, parks, and facilities maintenance.

* Equipment, tools, and materials used in public works maintenance.

* Regulations, codes, standards, and/or policies of state and/or federal occupational safety and health, accessibility (Americans with Disabilities Act), and environmental protection.

Skills/Abilities: * Safely operate and maneuver vehicles, tools, and equipment.

* Use hand and power tools safely and effectively.

* Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks in assigned operational areas.

* Maintain physical condition appropriate to assigned duties (lifting, standing, walking, bending). * Follow oral and written instructions independently and accurately.

* Use basic computer applications, including email, work order and service request systems, time entry/calendars, and simple written communication.

* Operate basic office equipment.

* Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

* Provide professional and responsive customer service to the public, coworkers, and other departments.

* Maintain organization and attention to detail in assigned work.
