Summary: The Asphalt Paver Operator is an hourly-rated position that is responsible for operating equipment used for placing asphalt on highways/roadways/parking lots.
Duties and Responsibilities: * The paver operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment, * Preparation and layout of area to be paved, material ordering, and job pacing, * Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment, * Ensure the equipment is properly preheated and ready for operation, * Align the paver into position when receiving asphalt by dump truck, ease paver forward, safely pushing dump truck along construction surface, * Must have a "safety first" attitude.
Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures is required, * Maintain speed of paver and move the paver machine to avoid wasting materials, * Must wear proper attire at all times including PPE * May be required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends, * Additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: * Must have 1 or more years of asphalt paver operation experience, * Valid unrestricted driver's license with a good driving history preferred, * Must have reliable transportation, * Ability to follow directions of the supervisor and other crew members, * High School diploma, GED or equivalent desired, * Solid understanding of all aspects of the paving operation including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, joints, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving, * Must be able to lift, spread, and move materials by hand or hand tools such as shovels, * DC Class 7B Operators license required, * Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.
Working Conditions: * Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds continuously throughout the workday, * Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, and twist, throughout the workday, * This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, * This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time and the constant use of hands and arms, * This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (e.g., glasses, contact lenses), * Performing strenuous work for extended periods in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, and other inclement weather conditions, * Work may be performed in environments with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and moving equipment.
* Note: This position is considered Safety-Sensitive, and therefore subject to various schedule and unscheduled screenings for controlled substances.
