Commercial Sewing Machine Operator – 1st & 2nd Shift Position Summary

The Commercial Sewing Machine Operator is responsible for operating industrial sewing equipment to produce high quality sewn components used in commercial products. This role includes sewing, assembly, quality inspection, and routine machine maintenance. Operators ensure consistent output and adherence to production and safety standards across both 1st and 2nd shift operations.Key Responsibilities Sewing & Fabrication

Operate commercial/industrial sewing machines such as walking-foot, serger, overlock, zig zag, double-needle, and heavy duty machines.

Sew materials including fabric, vinyl, canvas, leather, and specialty textiles according to production specifications.

Follow patterns, templates, or work orders to assemble components accurately.

Ensure consistent seam quality, alignment, and stitch integrity.Machine Setup & Adjustment

Thread machines, install needles, change bobbins, and adjust tension as needed.

Set stitch length, machine speed, and material guides.

Perform basic troubleshooting and minor machine repairs.Quality Control

Inspect finished pieces for accuracy, defects, or irregularities.

Rework or repair items when required.

Maintain documentation when needed for production tracking.Productivity & Communication

Meet daily production quotas and maintain efficiency during shift hours.

Communicate with supervisors, shift leads, and other operators regarding issues, material shortages, or process improvements.

Support a smooth handoff between 1st and 2nd shifts when applicable.Safety & Housekeeping

Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE.

Maintain a clean, organized work area.

Handle sharp tools, heavy materials, and machinery safely.Qualifications Required

Prior experience operating commercial or industrial sewing machines.

Ability to read patterns, follow instructions, and produce consistent quality.

Strong attention to detail and hand eye coordination.

Ability to work in a production environment with time-based goals.Preferred

Experience in commercial upholstery, canvas fabrication, furniture manufacturing, or related industries.

Ability to operate multiple machine types.

Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting.Physical Requirements

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

Ability to lift 25–50 lbs depending on materials.

Manual dexterity and repetitive motion.
