Job Summary
This newly created position of Engineering Technician - Automation supports the Automation Engineering team in developing, building, and installing manufacturing equipment and tooling, with a strong focus on mechatronics.
Job Responsibilities
Lead installation efforts for individual machines as well as full manufacturing lines, including:
Working from equipment and line layout drawings
Performing mechanical assembly, drilling, tapping, and alignment
Installing and integrating control components such as sensors and scanners
Installing automation systems, PLCs, and associated electrical enclosures
Ensure all installations comply with schematics, electrical diagrams, and process pipeline drawings.
Troubleshoot equipment during startup, resolving mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues.
Diagnose and repair PLC, I/O, sensor, industrial camera, scanner, and motion-controller connections.
Assemble mechanical components for in-house-designed automation work cells.
Build machine structures using aluminum extrusion systems (T-Slots or Sigma Profiles).
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance and reliability.
Follow all safety procedures and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Assist with mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical repairs during installation, startup, and improvement projects.
Support engineering teams with mechanical, electrical, or software updates to maintain system accuracy and reduce scrap.
Maintain and update documentation, including wiring diagrams, PLC logic files, project records, and configuration files.
Monitor recurring issues and collect data using diagnostic and monitoring tools.
Collaborate with engineering to implement design improvements and share technical insights.
Train maintenance technicians and machine operators on equipment operation and safety.
Educate production teams on newly installed automation systems and safe operating practices.
Verify system output meets required quality tolerances and standards.
Education & Qualifications
Associate degree in Automation, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field plus 2+ years of hands-on experience.
OR technical high school diploma focused on Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, or Electrical Technologies plus 3+ years of experience in high-volume manufacturing with automated equipment exposure.
Experience with mechanical assembly and automated machinery.
Familiarity with electrical measurement and testing tools such as multimeters (advanced electronics training provided).
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication skills, teamwork, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Ability to use CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for viewing and basic modifications; experience creating detailed part and assembly drawings is a plus.
Experience with PLC and HMI installation/configuration is a plus.
Experience with barcode readers and smart cameras (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Sick) is a plus.
