Middle School Science Teacher

Position Summary:
The Foote School seeks a talented, energetic individual to join its faculty as a middle school (grades 6-9) science teacher in late August 2026. The Foote School is an independent K-9 all-gender day school in New Haven, Connecticut. We believe children learn best when meaningful challenges are balanced with time to be children, so our days combine experiential learning, thoughtful inquiry, and space to grow.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in both science instruction and experience working with middle school-aged students. Essential Duties & Requirements:
Design and deliver high-quality, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instruction that meets the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students
Differentiate instruction to support individual student needs
Prepare and administer regular and varied assessments of student learning
Communicate effectively in support of each student with their parents, advisor, and other teachers
Complete trimester reports of students’ learning and recommendations as needed
Work collaboratively as a member of the Middle School Division and the science department to align curriculum across grade levels
Serve as a student advisor and homeroom teacher
Serve as an advisor (or co-advisor) to one or more student clubs or activities.
Participate meaningfully in school life beyond the classroom, including committee work, school events, and assigned duties (e.g., dismissal and greeting, advising, or recess coverage), contributing to a positive and collaborative school culture
Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in science or a closely related field; master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 2 - 4 years of experience teaching middle school science
Demonstrated commitment to professional learning and innovation
An ability and a willingness to adjust instruction and assessment to reflect the needs of individual students
An ability and a willingness to teach science with age-appropriate activities, experiments, and experiences for grades 6-9
A strong interest in developing curriculum for early adolescents
Ability to sustain and enhance scientific writing assignments
Experience and interest in teaching that honors different kinds of intelligence and values a variety of assessment tools - hands-on projects, student-designed experiments, creative and engaging engineering and design projects, and student-directed activities
The ability to work closely with colleagues in your content area and across content areas when developing interdisciplinary projects and creating experiences that develop important scientific skills
Experience with integrating technology into a science curriculum
An appreciation for independent school education and the middle school years
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to exercise sound judgment and work effectively with personnel, students, and families
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and embrace change in support of the organization’s mission and goals
Maintain confidentiality of all school information

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, 10-month, salaried exempt position. The school year hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., with summers and school holidays off.
