Definition Under general supervision of a professional engineer or surveyor, is responsible for performing entry-level paraprofessional engineering work; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) * Researches data and approves permit requests for street openings, vacation of right-of-ways, property easements, and property used for pole settings; * Conducts traffic studies and compiles pertinent data concerning signal justifications, accident diagrams, traffic control needs, and parking space availability; * Conducts field investigations to resolve problems that occur during construction and ensure that working drawings and plans are correctly prepared; * Reads maps, plans, specifications, and working drawings; * Investigates the operating conditions of existing traffic control devices; checks traffic signs and pavement markings to assess the visibility to viewers; * Calculates volumes, areas, and quantities from field notes and working drawings; * Operates and monitors a computerized traffic control system using closed-circuit television; * Observes work performed by contractors and assists them with the proper interpretation of plans and working drawings, as necessary; serves as liaison with contractors to ensure equipment or services are shut off or accommodated to allow projects to proceed; * Operates survey equipment such as levels, transits, and measuring devices; * Prepares reports and maintains records and files as necessary; creates documents and reports that may include spreadsheets, graphs, or tables; maintains records of equipment and vehicle inventories; * Investigates and responds to complaints or inquiries submitted by the general public, private industry, contractors, inspectors, and others; confers with contractors, inspectors, and citizens; * Ensures construction and maintenance work is recorded in map form; ensures working drawings and plans are correctly prepared; adds or makes corrections to information on drawings; * Operates various drafting tools such as a scale (engineer's ruler) or a computer aided drafting (CAD) system; * May file, cross reference, and organize drawings, plans, and maps; * May utilize GIS mapping software; * May serve as crew leader.

Minimum Qualifications Completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience in the performance of paraprofessional engineering or surveying work; construction project management; construction materials testing; construction inspection; plan reviews for permitting or design (i.e.

architectural or engineering); utility line locating; performing traffic studies; or operating centralized control systems via computerized interface such as for traffic control or SCADA.

Substitution(s): One (1) year of college education in engineering, drafting, construction management, or a related curriculum may be substituted for the required experience (thirty (30) semester/forty-five (45) quarter credit hours equals one (1) year). Completion of a vocational program in engineering, drafting, construction management, or related field may substitute for the required experience.

A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade requirement.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Reading Maps, Plans, and Drawings; Logic and Reasoning; Tools, Equipment, Safety; Mathematics; Reading Comprehension; Street Maintenance; Problem Sensitivity; and 2019/2021 Excel, Outlook, and Word.

The exam is expected to be administered in April.

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score.

The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years.

If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
