About RMJ Consultant
RMJ Consultant is a fast-growing, multi-service accounting and tax advisory firm based in Houston, TX. We provide tax preparation, tax planning, tax resolution, bookkeeping, CFO advisory, and advanced financial strategy services to business owners and high-income professionals.
We are entering a scale and acquisition phase, with plans to grow through both organic expansion and firm acquisitions. We are seeking a senior operator who can run the firm day-to-day, build systems, lead teams, and drive performance—allowing the Founder to focus on growth, capital, and strategy.
Role Summary
The Director of Operations / Managing Director will serve as the #2 executive and be responsible for running RMJ Consultant’s operations end-to-end. This role owns execution, people, systems, and performance.
This is not an administrative office manager role. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting or tax firm background, understands how professional service firms operate, and can both lead strategically and execute tactically when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Firm Operations & Execution
Oversee all daily operations of the accounting and tax practice
Ensure timely, accurate delivery of tax preparation, planning, bookkeeping, and advisory services
Manage workflows during tax season and off-season
Handle complex client escalations and operational decision-making
Step into technical or review work when required
SOPs, Systems & Process Design
Build, document, and maintain SOPs for:
Tax preparation & review
Tax planning & advisory
Bookkeeping & CFO services
Client onboarding & communication
Quality control and compliance
Reduce founder dependency through systemization
Implement operational tools and workflows to improve efficiency
KPIs, Performance & Profitability
Design and track KPIs including:
Revenue per client
Turnaround time
Error and rework rates
Client retention
Upsell and cross-sell conversion
Monitor margins and operational efficiency
Deliver weekly and monthly performance reports to leadership
Team Leadership & Talent Management
Lead and manage staff (tax preparers, bookkeepers, VAs, contractors)
Onboard, train, and develop team members
Enforce accountability, quality standards, and firm culture
Participate in hiring, performance management, and termination decisions
Growth & Expansion Support
Support implementation of higher-value services (tax planning, tax resolution, CFO advisory, insurance integration where compliant)
Assist with onboarding and integration of acquired firms
Prepare RMJ Consultant to scale from hundreds to thousands of clients annually
Help position the firm as acquisition-ready and institution-grade
Qualifications
Required
5+ years of experience in an accounting or tax firm environment
Strong understanding of tax operations and professional services workflows
Proven experience managing teams and firm operations
Ability to both lead strategically and execute hands-on when needed
Strongly Preferred
CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA)
Prior role as Operations Manager, Practice Manager, Senior Manager, or Director
Experience in a $1M+ revenue accounting or tax firm
Exposure to tax planning, advisory, or firm acquisitions
Full-time
