Position Summary
The Underground Utility Laborer – Underground Utilities supports crews in the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, storm drainage, gas, and telecommunications. This role performs physical labor, assists equipment operators and skilled trades, maintains job site safety, and ensures work areas are clean and compliant with company and OSHA standards.
Required Skills and Abilities
Assist with the installation and repair of underground utilities, including water, sewer, storm, gas, and telecom lines
Perform manual labor such as digging, trenching, backfilling, grading, and compacting
Load, unload, and move materials, tools, and equipment
Assist equipment operators, pipe layers, and foremen as directed
Set up and maintain jobsite safety measures, including barricades, cones, and signage
Spot equipment and ensure safe operation around trenches and utilities
Use hand and power tools safely and effectively
Perform site cleanup and restoration, including asphalt, concrete, and landscaping repair
Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and jobsite procedures
Report hazards, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions to supervision
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required
Prior construction or underground utility experience preferred
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 75 lbs
Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn
Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
Valid driver’s license and must be insurable.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment
Ability to work in and around trenches, uneven terrain, and confined spaces
Ability to wear required PPE, including a hard hat, safety vest, gloves, boots, and eye protection
Work Environment
Outdoor construction sites
Exposure to dust, noise, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions
Extended hours, early mornings, and occasional overtime may be required
