POSITION SUMMARY
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the planning, analysis, design and documentation of the electrical distribution system. The role supports the engineering and construction of new distribution lines, system improvements and joint use of poles and conduit systems. The Electrical Engineer works closely with senior engineering staff, electric crews and contractors to ensure safe, reliable and efficient construction and maintenance activities. The individual should possess outstanding technical skills, excellent communication and attention to detail to perform engineering design, prepare construction drawings, coordinate field activities and support system modeling.
RESPONSIBILITIES, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
Develop engineering drawings, construction designs, material lists and cost estimates for electric distribution system improvement projects and new customer connections
Produce and maintain CAD drawings, design documents and accurate as-built records to support construction and system modeling
Review and assist in preparing technical specifications for equipment selection, conductor sizing, routing and utility infrastructure design
Support development, maintenance and operation of engineering models, GIS mapping systems and distribution system databases
Analyze system performance and asset data to support planning studies and inform capital improvement projects
Coordinate construction and maintenance activities with field crews and contractors, including preparation of switching and tagging orders and commissioning documentation
Monitor Inspection and Maintenance programs for electrical distribution assets and recommend corrective actions
Provide technical support during outages, emergency events and in adverse weather conditions
Assist with utility locate requests and provide documentation to support safe trenching and excavation activities
Coordinate permit requests for joint use attachment, conduit systems and right-of-way access
Work directly with customers, developers and contractors to support project requirements and resolve technical questions
Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to ensure successful project execution and compliance with engineering standards
Assist with vegetation management program and tree trimming efforts
Perform all other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Familiarity with specialized industry related software and applications
Understand municipal and utility operations and terminology
Knowledge of electrical distribution theory, equipment and operations
Skill in preparing charts, graphs and reports
Proficient with use of office computers, printers and software applications to include, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to work both independently and as a team member within a multi-disciplined municipal utility operation
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of proper safety procedures related to electricity and general construction
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Drafting, Surveying or other related discipline required
Project management experience preferred
Construction activity experience preferred
Minimum one (1) to three (3) years of experience with an electric utility preferred[CA1]
Valid driver's license
