Position Summary
The Dialysis Technician provides direct patient care and technical support for individuals undergoing hemodialysis treatment. This role is responsible for preparing dialysis equipment, monitoring patients during treatment, responding to complications, and ensuring accurate documentation in accordance with established protocols and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Treatment
Prepare dialysate according to established procedures and patient prescriptions
Obtain and document pre- and post-dialysis vital signs (including weight and temperature)
Inspect dialysis access sites and initiate dialysis per protocol
Monitor blood flow rates and adjust according to prescription and unit guidelines
Administer anticoagulants per protocol and provider order
Monitor patients throughout treatment and document condition and treatment parameters
Adjust fluid removal rates and patient positioning as directed by RN or protocol
Discontinue dialysis treatment per protocol and ensure proper hemostasis and site care
Reinforce treatment education with patients
Monitoring & Emergency Response
Monitor dialysis equipment, alarms, conductivity, and temperature
Respond to dialysis-related emergencies, including hypotension, needle displacement, clotting, blood leaks, or air embolism
Initiate CPR in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest
Communicate patient concerns (medical, emotional, psychosocial, nutritional) to RN or provider
Equipment & Infection Control
Inspect, test, and prepare dialysis machines prior to treatment
Clean, sanitize, and maintain equipment after treatment according to manufacturer and unit protocols
Verify absence of residual sterilants
Collect fluid samples or other specimens for testing
Dispose of dialysis supplies appropriately
Documentation & Compliance
Document treatment details accurately in EMR systems
Complete required flow sheets for billing verification
Review lab results and physician orders
Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations (CMS, HIPAA, OSHA)
Participate in quality assurance and cost-containment initiatives
Team Support
Assist nursing staff with basic clinical procedures
Monitor and educate patients on vascular access care under RN direction
Maintain inventory of supplies and ensure adequate patient care materials
Participate in multidisciplinary team processes and meetings
Maintain professional conduct and confidentiality
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Dialysis Technician certification required
CPR/BLS certification required
Knowledge of hemodialysis procedures and equipment
Strong documentation and communication skills
Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
This position is located within an adult prison system; employees may have direct contact with incarcerated individuals.
