The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch Information Technology Division is seeking a Temporary Information Technology Assistant (UI/UX Designer) for a 12-month term in its Application Development and Support Unit, to support the design, enhancement, and modernization of digital services used by both the public and internal Judicial Branch staff.

This position is ideal for a student or recent graduate seeking hands-on experience in user interface (UI) design, user experience (UX) research, accessibility, and government digital standards within a mission-driven public service environment.

The selected candidate will work on the Judicial Branch websites and web-based applications, gaining practical experience in usability, accessibility (WCAG), and structured design collaboration within a large-scale enterprise IT environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with designing and improving web pages and web-based applications.Help create wireframes, mockups, and basic prototypes.Support usability reviews and content organization.Apply branding, style guides, and accessibility standards to designs.Review existing pages for usability, clarity, and accessibility improvements.Review and edit requirements, specifications, business processes and recommendations related to new processes, functionalities, and/or proposed solutions.Collaborate with developers, content editors, and project team members.Update and organize design files and documentation.Incorporate feedback from supervisors and stakeholders.

The selected candidate will learn:Practical UI/UX design with government websites and business applications.Fundamentals of accessible and inclusive design (WCAG / Section 508).How design decisions impact public-facing digital services.Collaboration between designers, developers, and business users.Working within real-world constraints such as policy, compliance, and timelines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Current student or recent graduate in UI/UX Design, Graphic Design, Web Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Media, or a related field.(or equivalent coursework or portfolio work)Basic understanding of user-centered design principles.Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or SketchWillingness to learn and take direction.Strong attention to detail.Ability to communicate clearly and work as part of a team.Self-starter who can operate independently and take ownership.

Preferred (But Not Required)Coursework or exposure to accessibility, ADA, WCAG, or inclusive design.Web UI design principles.Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS (no coding required).Experience with school, volunteer, or personal design projects.Interest in civic technology, public service, or government work.

Successful candidates will receive $16.94 per hour plus sick time and will be potentially eligible for health benefits.
