TITLE: Tools Engineer

Position Summary
The Tools Engineer is responsible for the architecture, administration, integration, and lifecycle management of all IT Operations and Security tools used across client environments. This role ensures tooling is standardized, secure, cost-effective, and operationally efficient. The Tools Engineer will drive consolidation efforts, reduce tool sprawl, improve automation, and ensure tools are fully leveraged across Operations and Security teams.
This role acts as the technical owner of platforms including RMM, PSA/ticketing, EDR, SIEM, vulnerability scanning, patching, backup, identity tooling, and security awareness platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Tool Ownership & Administration
Serve as the technical owner for all managed service and security platforms (RMM, PSA, SIEM, EDR, backup, vuln scanning, firewall management, identity tools, email security, PAM, etc.).
Maintain tool configurations, policies, integrations, user access, licensing, and role-based permissions.
Ensure tools are configured according to operational standards and security best practices.
Manage multi-tenant client environments and enforce consistent deployment baselines.
Tool Consolidation & Standardization
Lead initiatives to reduce tool sprawl by identifying overlapping capabilities and driving consolidation.
Evaluate tool performance, feature gaps, cost effectiveness, and vendor roadmaps.
Develop standardized toolkits and service packages aligned to client tiers.
Maintain an approved tools catalog and roadmap.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
Strong experience administering MSP/MSSP toolsets such as:
RMM ( Datto RMM, ConnectWise Automate, etc.)
PSA/Ticketing (ConnectWise Manage, Freshdesk, Altera)
EDR/AV (Huntress, SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender)
SIEM (Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk, Sophos, etc.)
Vulnerability tools (Tenable, Rapid7, Qualys)
Backup/DR platforms (Veeam, Datto, Acronis)
Identity & MFA (Azure AD/Entra, Duo)
Email security (Proofpoint, Mimecast, Defender)
PAM / password vaults (CyberArk, Keeper, BeyondTrust)
Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell strongly preferred; Python a plus).
Experience with Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Azure, networking, and endpoint management.
Familiarity with logging, alerting, and detection engineering concepts.
Required Qualifications
3–7+ years experience in a technical engineering role in an MSP or MSSP environment.
Proven experience integrating and managing multi-tool environments.
Experience driving tool consolidation and standardization initiatives.
Strong troubleshooting skills across endpoint, network, cloud, and security layers.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in multi-tenant MSP/MSSP environments.
Certifications (preferred but not required):
Microsoft (AZ-104, MS-102, SC-200)
CompTIA Security+, Network+
ITIL Foundation
CISSP / GCIH / GCIA (nice to have)
Experience with SOAR tooling (XSOAR, Sentinel playbooks, Splunk SOAR, etc.).
Experience building internal automation frameworks or integration hubs.
