USMC, Pilot and Program Manager 1980 - 2001
Primary function in USMC was Helicopter Pilot. Collateral duties highlighting military career are briefly identified. Chief Executive Officer – responsible for the overall readiness of Airborne Infantry unit in excess of 250 personnel. Directed implementation of advanced training school of incoming personnel cutting initial training time in half. Lead more than twenty overseas deployments in two-year period. Responsible for multi-million dollar inventory of weapons, communications and motor transport equipment accounts. Only USMC unit recognized by Commanding General, 1st Marine Division, Republic of Korea Marine Corps for outstanding service during Operation UFL-97. Risk Assessment Manager - sole source authority on Risk Management to Marine Forces Reserve for all matters including training procedures modifications and improvements in tactical training operations for the reserve component of the USMC. Authorized development of solutions for reserve personnel management and scheduling. Designated Risk Management Instructor for all West Coast USMCR units (25,000 personnel in 16 major commands). Chief Operations Officer - built operational strategies for achieving unit’s goals. Was responsible and accountable for daily operations of a unit exceeding 400 personnel and the operation of $300 million in aircraft inventory. Solidified and improved aviation reporting system through consolidation of several databases reducing reporting time by several days. Used alternate logistical support methods to support extended operations and reduce cost.
Program Director of Aviation and Industrial Safety - introduced and evaluated new Risk Management targeted for Chief Operations Officers in small and large organizations. Directed start-up and reorganization of programs revitalizing the command’s safety management. Developed and maintained a high quality aviation safety program for over 3000 personnel and 120 aircraft. Chief inspector for aviation and industrial safety management programs. Authored Standard Operational Procedures for Safety Department, conducted 4 major crash investigations with attendant reports, and over 50 aviation and industrial hazard reports with necessary corrective measures. Reorganized aviation certification classes and readiness exams.
Instructor Pilot – HMT-301, MAG-16, 3d MAW. Responsible for training replacement aircrew to fill fleet billets. Involved in all phases of pilot training in the CH-46 helicopter from Familiarization to Instruments to TERF/NVG instruction. Collateral duties as 3d MAW Instrument School Instructor providing ground school requirements for pilot annual instrument rating qualification. Additionally served as West Coast Model Manager for the MV-22 Fleet Introduction Team to include training simulator development. Worked closely with Bell-Boeing, Hughes, and GE for OT&E requirements.
