A 140 year old and the largest life insurance provider in the United States with more than $2 trillion of life insurance in force in addition to providing financial services.
Manager – Institutional SOX (2006 – 2008)
Led a team of 5 professionals who had the responsibility to annually test and opine on the Institutional line of business financial controls.
• Performed detailed walk throughs for 300 internal controls and 80 business processes.
• Tested all key controls at 13 different locations and designed meaningful test plans to align the business with the company risk.
• Ensured cost effective SOX compliance with sections 302/404 and AS 5.
• Ensured that each of the 35 process owners certified their processes each quarter and signed off on each control at year end.
• Discussed control failures with business partners and performed retesting when the timing was appropriate.
• Leveraged testing activities with Internal Audit and other control functions within the organization so that SOX walkthroughs and detailed testing were focused on the greatest areas of risk and that no duplicate test work was performed.
• Reduced controls by 25% over a two years by eliminating redundant controls, relying on entity level controls, and working with the IT Audit team to identify systematic controls.
• Reduced the potential for fraud in key business areas by reacting to issues within the organization that could impact several business areas throughout the company.
Finance Manager – Product Development (2004 – 2006)
Managed a team of 3 who had the responsibility to create, test, and ensure the financial accuracy of any new and existing product offered and being sold by the company.
• Researched and provided guidance for accounting irregularities on current product accounting and ensured consistency existed between products with similar features and characteristics.
• Reviewed and reconciled quarterly separate account activity for accuracy to various data from sub-systems. The average separate account had a market value of over $50 million.
• Streamlined the testing results of accounting entries by coordinating efforts with the Information Technology team to ensure each transaction generated by each system was accurate. There were approximately 25 different applications which processed transactions.
Senior Auditor – Internal Auditing (1998 – 2004)
Developed audit programs, tested transactions for compliance with corporate policy, and discussed findings with senior management. Audits encompassed real estate joint ventures, corporate expense allocations, sales office compliance, and following up on customer allegations of alleged fraud.
• Reviewed business processes and financial practices enterprise-wide to ensure best practices, procedural efficiency, and financial accuracy.
• Managed action plans of 100 current issues and tracked these issues to their ultimate resolution.
• Developed audit programs for first time audits in areas such as Corporate Advertising, and expense allocations in addition to preparing detailed flowcharts, and process write-ups to identify control points and areas to perform detailed testing.
