Duties:

• Starting at Paladin African there were only 16 employees on the books as the mine was still in construction phase with over 1000 contractors on site

• Started with the drawing up of all HR procedures and policies which included the following:

• -Disciplinary Code and Procedures

• -Engagement procedures for both Expats and Malawi Nationals

• -Employment contracts for both Malawi Nationals and Expats

• -Leave procedures for Malawi Nationals

• -Remuneration structures for Malawi Nationals

• -Relocation policy

• -Grievance procedure, etc

• Total workforce of +/- 700. No HRIS system existed and I had to develop / implement and manage the HRIS system

• Project leader for implementation of VIP together with the consultants from VIP in South Africa and was also responsible for the recruitment of expat and national employees

• Disciplinary and grievance procedures, annual leave, sick leave, employee personal files and any pay related issues such as increases, leave entitlement changes

• I am also part of the Camp Management team responsible for the housing, meals, laundry and after hours events for both Expats and Malawi Nationals staying in the Camp at Kayelekera

• When I started at SMD Lero there was basically no HR Structure and procedures and/or policies

• Developed, implemented and managed the disciplinary code and procedure on the mine in close co-operation with the Union

• Act as Chairperson for all the disciplinary hearings

• Had close relations with the community leaders, Chiefs of the Villages and government officials and as such negotiated land claims with the community leaders and farmers, organized emergency services, food and supplies when half of Lero was accidently destroyed by a fire

• Acted as HR Manager for +/- 4 months while the HR Manager went on rotational leave

Duties:

• Started as Human Resources Trainee at St Helena Goldfields Mine

• Training took 2 years. Received training in HR control, industrial relations, high density accommodation management, payroll administration, recruitment and people selection.

Position: HR Officer

Duties:

• Appointed in 1980 as Human Resources Officer on a production shaft.

• Workforce +/- 3 400 people on the shaft

• Responsible for the total HR function on the shaft under the guidance of the HR Superintendent

• Duties included recruitment, selection, training and placement of employees.

• Also responsible for the industrial relations on the shaft

Duties:

• Promoted in 1982 to Human Resources Superintendent on production shaft +/- 4000 employees

• Two HR Officers and 16 HR Assistants reporting to me

• Managed the complete HR Function on the shaft and reported to the Labor Manager

• Acted on several occasions for the Labor Manager who was responsible for the HR function of the 15 000 employees

PROJECTS

During the last 5 years, I was seconded to Head Office at Goldfields for long periods of time to do the following projects:

* INTEGRATED HR & PAYROLL COMPUTERISED SYSTEM

• For 2 years I was on the team to develop this system. It involved all HR systems and procedures, payroll systems and procedures and IR systems and procedures.

• Once the system was operational, I was responsible for the implementation and management of the system at Beatrix Mine, with a workforce of +/- 12 000.

• For 1 year I was the representative of Beatrix Mine on a project team whose responsibility it was to change the current pay structure of employees to package payment. This involved changing all designations to generic designations for the whole Goldfields Group (+/- 80 000 employees), do feasibility studies and change management programs together with all Unions (NUM, UASA & Solidarity)

• My last project was the implementation of medical aid schemes to the group’s semi-skilled and unskilled employees. This involved meetings with large numbers of employees, trade Unions and management.

• I received a bonus and a certificate from Goldfields Head Office due to the success of this project.
