The Times Herald – The first 3 months I operated their 4 color Shiva press printing glossy covers for insert magazines and Woods and Waters monthly magazine. From Jan. 2005 until the April 2007 I was the press foreman on their newspaper press (Goss Urbanite) in charge of the printing of USA Today Newspaper. When {Port Huron lost USA Today I was laid off and worked temporarily for the Detroit Free Press on their Mann Roland until I was re-employed back at the Times Herald as a press operator, a position I held until December 2008.

• In charge of a crew of 8 pressmen.

Huhtamaki – Auckland New Zealand 2001 – Nov 2003

Converting supervisor / waste improvement coordinator / special projects supervisor / shift supervisor.

I accepted the opportunity to assist in the Auckland operation during the latter stages of the integration of the branches. My initial task was to relieve the converting supervisor to allow him to deal with project requirements set by his manager. This was a 12-week project that allowed me to make changes within the department from planning and workflow through the machines, maintenance planning and staff restructuring. The results from this lead to my temporary employment being extended until I was ready to leave for the States. Following this I have been working for the Operations Manager on the reduction of waste in the manufacturing segment of the branch. As well as completing special projects before accepting the position of Shift Supervisor for the factory for the last 7 months.

Key Accomplishments:

• Change of attitude from piecemeal approach to work to running out complete jobs.

• Clearing backlog ($350,000) of "work in progress" from only customer requirements to turning over complete stock in the racks and holding as finished goods. This increased meeting our customer delivery dates taking “delivery in full on time” to 97% from 92.2%.

• Assisted in the commissioning of the slitter machines that came from other branches.

• Instigated some of the systems for production recording and maintenance requests to improve planning of repairs and waste measurement by job batch.

• Data collection and analysis to feed back to department managers to address areas where improvements were required. Then following up to analyze the effectiveness of the changes.

• Influence changes in staff cultures through assistance and creating awareness of current performance levels of process waste.

• Assist in the design and implementation of new production recording systems on the machines and for stock movement

• Take over responsibility of work in progress goods, storage, control, stock levels and material issues and completed monthly stock takes. This role also meant the change of roles for 3 staff that now reported directly to myself.

• Working with department supervisors to develop their areas in accordance with HACCP (Hygiene and Critical Care Point) and H&S (Health and Safety) requirements.

• Take over the role of afternoon shift supervisor, being responsible for all department daily operations and production requirements for that shift.

Huhtamaki Van Leer – Napier 1991 – 2001

Factory Manager / Shift Manager / Press Supervisor / Printer

Joined the company as a printer with dual goals of, learning the principles of web / gravure printing, and follow my ambitions of moving back into a supervisory position. I spent 6 years running an 8 colour Comprint gravure press, moving into a shift manager’s role at the start of 1998. This included the overseeing of all the production functions within the plant. In March 2000 I was offered and accepted the position of Factory Manager reporting directly to the Operations Manager.

Key Accomplishments:

• Set up systems for the real time recording of printing cylinder identification, location and movement. Asset value in excess of $2,500,000.

• Set up detailed press setting and ink formulation-recording systems. Improved press set up times by 40 minutes (20%) through more accurate colour matching of inks

• Improved communication and interaction between departments, using the “next process is a customer” approach. This assisted in areas that proved to slow production due to some operating techniques that had detrimental effects on following processes.

• Work in with the customers to help both them and ourselves get a better understanding of how products need to perform. Improved expectations for both parties when setting standards

• Altered the process on some base laminating lines that previously were run in individual order using the same base products, to batch orders. This created a saving of over $12,000 a month through less machine downtime and reduced waste, as left over stock could be used in following orders

• Assisted in the implementation of ISO 9001 and 9002 initiating check systems for the printing department.
