Hemas Hospitals Group currently owns and operates two private hospitals
in Sri Lanka and will be establishing 2 more hospitals by 2013.

Hemas is the first hospital chain in Sri Lanka to obtain an International
Accreditation and accredited by Australian Council on Health Standards in
2011.

Roles and Responsibilities
Operational Business Head for both hospitals under Hemas Hospitals and heads the management teams of both hospitals while directly reporting to the Chairman of the hospitals group.
Direct reports – Heads of Medical Services, Nursing, Laboratory, Human Resources, Facilities & Engineering and Marketing
Responsible for overall quality and safety of delivery of healthcare and chairing the Quality Improvement Committee ( QuIC )
Setting up, implementation and review of all the policies, protocols and guidelines related to patient care and general administration
Convener of all the committees related to care delivery such as Medical Advisory Committee, Drugs and Therapeutic Committee, Adverse Events Review Committee and Credentialing Committee
Training of Nurses – there are 200 pupil nurses currently undergoing training ( 3 year diploma ) under Hemas Hospitals
Development of other Allied Healthcare Categories
Coordination of visiting Medical Specialists
Coordination with Regulatory and statuary bodies such as Ministry of Health, Private Healthcare Institution Regulatory Council, Local Health Authorities and Local Government
Clinical Risk Management
Special Projects
Led the project team to obtain Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Accreditation for both hospitals ( 2010 – 2011)
Instrumental in setting up of Adverse Event Reporting and Review system at Hemas Hospitals. Trained and developed a Cross – Functional Team and it was the first such team in a Sri Lankan hospital ( 2009 )
Instrumental in setting up a partnership programme to train nurses for Hemas Hospitals under Open University of Sri Lanka ( Public – Private Partnership ) and it was the first such programme in Sri Lanka ( 2010 )
Leading the team for expansion of diagnostic laboratory services by setting up a chain of branch laboratories and sample collection centres

01.Medical Administration Manager – Durdans Hospital, Colombo
May 2004 to September 2008
Overall in - charge of all routine operations of Durdans Hospital and
Durdans Heart Centre except for finance, marketing, transport and security.
Durdans Hospital is one of the largest private hospitals in Colombo with a
bed capacity of 160 at that time and now being expanded to 320 beds. It
operates the busiest Cardiac Centre in the country.
Was responsible for delivery of quality health care, all aspects of
patient care, training of Nursing and other para medical staff,
management of pharmaceutical stores
Was responsible for all the matters related to medical, nursing and
para – medical care.
Management of all bio – medical equipment.
Played a key role in planning and designing of the expansion
project
02. Medical Officer – Planning, Tertiary Care Services Unit, Ministry of
Health, Sri Lanka January to April 2004
Responsible for planning for infrastructure development, human resources
and quality assurance under the supervision of Director – Tertiary Care.
Tertiary care unit covers all the Teaching Hospitals, General Hospitals and

03.Senior House Officer – Cardio Thoracic Unit, National Hospital of

Apart from clinical responsibilities actively involved in re – organizing the
Unit, establishing the first ever high – dependency unit in NHSL,
Coordinating expatriate Cardiac Teams visiting NHSL such as Children’s
Heart Project from Phoenix, USA, Guy’s Hospital Cardiac Team from UK
and Oxford Hospital Team from UK .
NHSL is the largest hospital in Sri Lanka with 2500 beds and performed
more than 800 Cardiac Operations a year at that time.
