Thesis Summary:

My research work involves natural product extraction as well as synthesis of oleochemical and their biological activity. The different plant seed oils were collected and extracted using Soxlet apparatus and further purified by different Chromatographic Methods such as Picric - acid thin layer chromatography, argentitation chromatography, Column chromatography. Further the peaks were identified by comparing their retention times with those of standard reference sample under the similar conditions in Gas chromatography. The various chemical tests like direct thin layer chromatography test, Halphen test, 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (2-4-DNPH) thin layer chromatography test, picric acid thin layer chromatography test were carried out for hydroxy, cyclopropenoid, keto and epoxy functional groups respectively. Analytical values of oils were determined according to AOCS methods (Iodine value and Saponification value). The chemical screening that revealed the natural sources of unusual fatty acids in several minor-oilseeds. The new and interesting unusual fatty acids present in high concentration in certain seed oils are being exploited for the industrial utilization.

The seed oils of Cleome icosandra, Celosia cristata, Prosopis specigera, Cassia tora, Vitex negundo, Ceiba pentendra and Swietenia humilis contain Cyclpropenoid fatty acid. The cyclopropenoid fatty acids have been characterized as 7-(2-octacyclopropen-l-yl)heptanoic acid (malvalic acid) and 8-(2-octacyclopropen-1-yl)octanoic acid (sterculic acid).

The unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids isolated from Cleome icosandra, Celosia cristata, Prosopis specigera, Cassia tora, Vitex negundo, Ceiba pentendra and Swietenia humilis seed oils have been characterized as 12- hydroxyoctadec-cis-9-enoic (ricinoleic) acid.

Synthetic part: involves synthesis of oleo-benzimidazole.

The present synthetic investigation describes the reaction of different substituted o- phenylenediamine, with different unusual fatty acids under microwave irradiation to yield novel oleo-benzimidazoles.

Further biological activity was carried out for both seed oils as well as newly synthesized oleochemicals. It was observed that most of the natural products showed a moderate activity against the different strains of bacteria and fungi. Oleo-benzimidazole derivatives showed good activity against the different strains of bacteria and fungi.

Apart from thesis work, Oleo-triazolo-thiadiazole, Oleo-pyrazzole were synthesized by thermal as well as by microwave irradiation. A comparative study of thermal process and microwave irradiation is under progress so that green chemistry concept becomes more focused in our research investigation and their biological activity is also carried out simultaneously.
