PROJECT PROFILE:

Project Name: AETNA PBC Claims

Project Description:

The PBC Claims project will maintain and enhance the Electronic Workflow Management system and the Operational Reporting System, two systems critical to the claim adjudication process of Aetna.

Electronic Workflow Manager, EWM, is a workflow system that validates claims submitted by members or providers and sends them to the appropriate claim adjudication system. The adjudication systems Aetna uses are ACAS and HMO. When a claim comes into the EWM system, it undergoes claim validations, member and provider verification, duplicate checking and routing to corresponding adjudication systems. EWM has online and batch applications. The online part consists of non-interactive systems that validate the data on a received claim. The interactive system is used for claim processors to manually correct errors on claim records. The batch application is used to do periodic activities such as backing up data, archiving old data and purging duplicate tables.

The Operational Reporting System is a system that creates periodic reports for Aetna’s business units. The ORS application receives claim events from EWM and ACAS through MQ Hub. The ORS claim event summarization process creates daily reports and summarizes the daily events of the previous day for the Weekly, Monthly, Year To week, Year to month, Quarter to Month reports. These reports are generated at National, Regional, and Segment, Site and Office level for different customers and different geographical locations. The ORS Web application extracts these reports from midrange to Aetna Web through Unix Shell scripts. Some reports are generated through DB2 Stored procedures called either from midrange or from web. All the Stored procedures and batch jobs reside on an OS/390 mainframe.
