Case manager for VCNY’s recently-created Adult Protective Services unit. VCNY-APS contracts with New York City to provide mandated social services to adults who are “at risk” in their communities. Gained considerable experience working with people with mental illnesses, mental retardation/developmental disabilities, and other impairments. Responsibilities included implementation of concrete services, as well as case assessment, short-term counseling, and coordination of services with other providers. Job required extensive knowledge of government and private financial entitlements; housing issues (Section 8, evictions); Medicare/Medicaid; home care; civil court procedures and immigration law.

Case manager for social service agency specializing in the field of Elder Abuse. Duties included helping seniors obtain New York State Crime Victims Board compensation; crisis counseling; assistance in finding short-term shelter, and coordination with law enforcement agencies. Walk The Walk ceased operation in February ’04.
2/03-8/03 Community Advisory Program for the Elderly Queens, N.Y.
Part-time (20 hours/week) crisis counselor for CAPE’s “Project Liberty” team. Project Liberty was a federally-funded program to assist persons affected by the events of 9/11/2001. Duties included individual and group counseling, and running seminars on stress reduction and anger management at senior centers, churches and other community organizations. Funding for the program ceased in August,’03.
Prior to changing careers in early 2003, spent 31 years as a writer and editor, primarily for trade and consumer magazines and newspapers. Full-time jobs included business editor at Ziff-Davis’ SmartPartner magazine from 1997-2002; technology reporter at Investor’s Business Daily (1993-1995); and senior editor at Record magazine, a subsidiary publication of Rolling Stone (1981-1985). My freelance articles have appeared in dozens of major publications, including The New York Times, New York Daily News,, Manhattan inc., Boston Globe, Village Voice, Denver Post and Rolling Stone. In addition, during this period I took on a wide variety of freelance corporate writing assignments, including annual reports, marketing and sales brochures, white papers and newsletters. Corporate clients included General Electric, IBM, Digital Equipment Corp., Wm. Wrigley Co. and Unisys Corp.

Volunteer and other activities:
1997-2000 -- Volunteer with the “Compeer” program of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services. The program paired volunteers with people with diagnosed mental illnesses; the aim being to help the clients move from isolation to involvement in their communities.
2002-2003 -- Substitute teacher/assistant teacher at Merrick Academy, a charter elementary school (grades K-4) in Queens. Worked about 2 days/week, on average, during the ’02-’03 school year.
