Procedures regularly utilised in the completion of my research included preparation of growth media and bacterial cell cultures, DNA extraction and purification, PCR, electrophoresis, ligation and electroporation, DNA sequencing and profiling which was done in co-ordination with Genentech’s pyrosqeuencing methods. Equipment regularly employed included GC-MS, spectrophotometer, autoclave, and centrifuge and freezer dyer. Other responsibilities: daily calibration checks, preparation of standard solutions as well as lab keep up. I was required to work within strict constraints and meticulously document my work on the LIMS. I also presented my work regularly to the research group and participated in meetings.
Other work experience
Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital 2008-2011
Clerical officer in the Accident and Emergency Department. Was solely responsible for the running of the dept. at weekends and public holidays. Duties included checking in of patients, billing and accounts, filing of medical reports including blood and microbiology reports, general administrative duties along with micro managing and patient care.
St Vincent’s Hospital 2009
Three month internship in the salaries department in one of Ireland’s largest hospitals. Skills acquired were training in the hospitals proprietary computer software, working to strict deadlines, organisation and filing of all salary related paperwork including timesheets for all staff (+/- 600 nursing staff)
