PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE
Therapist Intern, 08/10-04/11
Safety Center, Inc., Rochester, MN
I worked with male clients who struggle with psychosexual disorders and present with a variety of mental health symptoms which may include: personality disorders, mental illness, low/impaired functioning, and/or developmental disabilities. I have been trained in a cognitive behavioral/relapse prevention model of therapy. This model focuses on accountability, triggers, stoppers, developing empathy, and planning for completion and aftercare. I worked with clients primarily in a group therapy setting, as well as individually, to develop awareness and impart knowledge through psychoeducation. Other skills that I have developed through this experience include: basic counseling skills, de-escalation, risk assessment, and working as a team to coordinate strategic interventions. My case management responsibilities included: case notes, quarterly progress notes, functional assessments, correcting psychoeducation assignments, managing client charts, assisting with discharge summaries, and coordinating with treatment staff as well as the client’s system of support. In my practicum experience I accumulated over 1100 clinical hours and over 400 client-contact hours with over 150 hours of combined individual and group supervision.
