3rd CLASS PETTY OFFICER JAN 2001-NOV 2004
U.S. NAVY MAYPORT, FL
I served on the USS Philippine Sea Guided-Missile Cruiser in various capacities including performing as a Damage Control Petty Officer, part of the ship’s security watch, and Mess Specialist. As a Damage Control Petty Officer I was responsible for routine divisional maintenance and overall damage control of ship. Some of the duties that fell within this role were performing maintenance/repair on board, acting as a supply petty officer, being a lookout during ship control and navigation, and acting as an on board Fire Investigator. I was the Storeroom Supervisor responsible for maintaining supply inventories by ordering parts and equipment necessary for the ship’s readiness. I was also responsible for keeping accurate records of incoming and outgoing supplies. As a fire investigator, I did routine searches for ship “hot spots” to prevent fires. I trained my replacement and junior staff in that position to support ship’s readiness during damage control drills or in case of actual casualties. I supervised and evaluated a staff of 12 personnel. I wrote evaluations and counseled them on an ad hoc basis.
On the USS Philippine Sea, crew members were often called upon to perform in areas outside of their normal workload. During my time aboard the ship I was privy to handling confidential material and information. I served in other fields such as Security Guard; I handled small arms such as a 7.62 MM, M14 Rifle, 9 MM Pistol and a 12 Gauge Shotgun. I also served as Deck Watch in ports, Roving Patrol, Pier Security, and Petty Officer of the Watch while in port or overseas. I was trained in diffusing hostile situations and am a qualified sharpshooter in small arms and assault weapon. My vast experience aboard the ship provided me with the ability to communicate effectively in diverse environments, weather it is calm or hostile. I was required to provide briefings to superior officers and give guidance to people of lower rank of all departments. I investigated security and safety violations and written detailed incident reports, proofreading and checking contents of investigative reports.
As a Mess Specialist, I served as the Watch Captain (shift supervisor). I was responsible for the daily preparation of meals and cleanliness of galley spaces. I successfully directed and lead a watch during an inspection period by meeting the US Navy’s strict standards for cleanliness, efficiency and occupational safety. I also assumed the duties of a more experienced Watch Captain during his absence. My performance during that time was key to the Food Service Division receiving a 92.5% overall score for Food Service Excellence in Supply Management Assistant. I was commended on my communication, organization, and customer service with the help of my 12 staff members.
Aside from serving as a Watch Captain in the galley, I was responsible for the daily preparation of meals and sanitation of assigned space for a crew over 380 personnel. I prepared over 120,000 meals and over 50,000 bread products during an extended 7 month deployment and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Most of my major duties were in the Culinary Arts-Mess Management field. I performed general Mess Operations such as Butcher, Garde Manager. I maintained my work area to the extent that I provided Food Service Division a safe, clean, and hazardous free environment to work in. For my work as a Mess Specialist I was awarded “MS of the Month”.
