1981/2001 Assisted Friend, Mentor Donald B. Williams, Sr./Hospice Southfield, MI

Donald was diagnosised with Polycythemia Vera (PV) in 1981 and only given 3 to 5 years to live. Initially, the medical community wanted to do very aggressive treatment i.e. immediately remove his spleen and very stroung rounds of chemotherapy. He chose to forego their recommendations and followed a more nutritional approach, instead. Finally, in 1993, his spleen was removed – it weighed 15 pounds – the size of a watermelon - when it should be no more bigger than the size of your fist. Literally, from 1981 until his death, I drove him all over the United States seeking non-invasive help for his condition – as a result, he lived twenty years for the effort. He became a vegetarian, juiced, took megadoses of Vitamin C, exercised daily, played 18 holes of golf twice weekly, drank herbal teas from Dr. Fu Zang, M. D., consulted with Dr. Linus Pauling, Ph. D., Dr. Robert C. Atkins, M. D., Dr. Carleton Fredericks, M. D., Dr. Gary Null, Ph. D. and the doctors at the V.A. Hospital in Ann Arbor, who wrote articles about him. They said that they had never seen a PV patient like him and to have lived as long as he had. I provided hospice care for Donald from 2000 until his death on October 7, 2001.

Gary’s brother, Howard Null, was the manager of the ranch when he was in town. Howard was a psychologist, who’s specialty was drug and alcohol abuse. I was able to intern with him when clients would come to the ranch for assistance. Howard died in 2003 from a brain anyerism from complications due to throat cancer. We wrote our own material and performed our act on stage. I sent out query letters to the editors of the local newspapers to see if they would accept articles on the comedians. The Free Press responded. I was the only writer out of six (6) who stayed in class and became a critic for a newspaper…then, the war started in 1991 in the Middle East and the Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) between the papers in Detroit happened and no more freelance work was accepted from that point
