WORK EXPERIENCE

Research Assistant, Spark Plasma Sintering Laboratory Aug ’09 – Jul ‘11

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma

Optimized the parameters for processing of bioactive ceramics by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS)

Performed mechanical characterization of the fabricated bioactive materials and composites of hydroxyapatite, yttria stabilized zirconia, alumina and titanium

Assessed bioactivity of the sintered bulk samples in in simulated body fluid and also using MTT assay testing

Designed a composite of alumina in Co-W to serve as an alternative to hard chrome plating (Master’s thesis)

Fabricated Co-W alloy films and Co-W-alumina composite coatings using Pulse Electrodeposition (PED)

Characterized these coatings at both micro and nano-scales.

Successfully performed thermodynamic calculations using tools like Thermocalc and Factsage

Successfully published papers on both the topics in JOM, Applied Surface Science and Surface Engg

Extensively used MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint to present reports at meetings

Teaching Assistant, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Aug ’10 – May ‘11

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma

Conducted discussion sessions and office hours for ‘Phase Transformations’ course of graduate students

Conducted lab sessions for an undergraduate course on ‘Mechanical Metallurgy” of 60 students

Tutored, graded and assisted graduate students and undergraduate students.

Trained undergraduate students on evaluation of various materials by mechanical characterization techniques including optical microscopy, hardness, tensile testing, impact testing, fatigue testing and many others.

Graduate Trainee, Centre for Engineered Coatings Aug ’08 – Jul ‘09

International Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and Newer Materials(ARCI), Hyderabad, India

Worked as a graduate trainee at ARCI with Mr. N. Ravi, Centre for Engineered Coatings for a period of one year.

Extensive studies on the evolution of mechanical properties of thermally sprayed and pulsed electrolytically-deposited coatings by Depth Sensing Indentation Process.

Equipments Used: Cold Gas Dynamic Spray System, Pulsed Electrodeposition Equipment, Olympus GX51 Image Analyzer, Microhardness Tester, Universal Testing Machine (INSTRON), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Depth Sensing Nano-Indentor.

Responsibilities: Calculated of indentation hardness, fracture toughness, porosity, residual stresses and analysed the effect of process parameters on pulsed-electrodeposited and thermally sprayed coatings.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK – Dissertation

Worked on a project on fabrication of Co-W composite coatings to serve as alternatives for hard chrome replacements under the guidance of Dr. Sandip P. Harimkar.

The project deals with the fabrication of composite coatings by varying the pulse parameters, optimization of the parameters to obtain amorphous composite coatings and investigation of properties of the composite coatings to prove them as an efficient alternative for chrome plating.

Research in the area of Spark Plasma Sintering of Hydroxyapatite coatings used in biomedical implants

Worked on the processing of bulk hydroxyapatite and hydroxyapatite – yttria stabilized zirconia composites by spark plasma sintering to assess their biological performance along with achievement of improved mechanical properties.

Worked on deposition of hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium implants mainly used for the hip implants using the technique of spark plasma sintering.
