Bachelor of Science: Environmental Science
McMaster University, McMaster, ON
Course highlights:
• Soils & the Environment: this course emphasizes on physical and chemical properties of the solid (mineral and organic), liquid, and gas phases of soils. Provides understanding of the fundamentals of soils in our natural environment and their importance to plants, agricultural management, land use and conservation, climate change and other societally important topics
• Energy and Society: demonstrated mechanics of energy production from both conventional and unconventional sources. Identified the economic, environmental and social costs and benefits of different sources of energy
• Physical Hydrology: Successfully learned about topics such as hydrological processes including precipitation, snowmelt, hill slope runoff, stream flow and hydrological data analysis. Focused upon understanding the principles of hydrology, quantification of the hydrological processes and prediction of hydrological events
• Optical Mineralogy: Studied cross-sections of rocks. Examined the mineral properties of different rocks, and developed stereo nets and stratigraphic logs.
Projects
• Field work in Sudbury: Examined a rock record spanning more than 2 billion years of Earth’s history. Examined geological evidence for the earliest known (Paleoproterozoic) glaciation, Drew a geological map for the field area. Developed Stratigraphic columns, cross sections and stereo nets for the different structures.
• Particle size analysis of soil samples: became familiar with the methods commonly employed to determine the composition of a soil sample. Successfully determined the textural class of the soil samples based on their particle.
• Remediation of acid mine drainage: Determined effectiveness of sulphate-reducing bacteria/ wetland in an attempt to remediate AMD. To track the effectiveness of each treatment option, we monitored pH, [Fe3+], [Fe2+], [SO4]2-, [S2-], and [Ni2+] of the pyrite solution.
• Home Heating Audit for a building: Calculated the total Energy used by a sample building. Did this by making logs of all kinds of heat that was supplied and lost due to windows and surface
